Annual assessment of nesting populations of geese on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) provides information for biologists, participants in cooperative goose management plans, and Pacific Flyway technical committees. A ground-based sampling procedure has been used since 1986 to estimate the number of total nests, active nests, and eggs for cackling geese, emperor geese, greater white-fronted geese, and spectacled eiders. Annual information on the size of the nesting population and potential number of young produced contributes long term data needed to understand goose and eider population ecology and better manage these species. The survey has been the primary method of measuring recovery status for the western population...

Arid ecosystems are often vulnerable to transformation to invasive-dominated states following fire, but data on persistence of these states are sparse. The grass/fire cycle is a feedback process between invasive annual grasses and fire frequency that often leads to the formation of alternative vegetation states dominated by the invasive grasses. However, other components of fire regimes, such as burn severity, also have the potential to produce long-term vegetation transformations. Our goal was to evaluate the influence of both fire frequency and burn severity on the transformation of woody-dominated communities to communities dominated by invasive grasses in major elevation zones of the Mojave Desert of western...

Modeling streamflow is an important approach for understanding landscape-scale drivers of flow and estimating flows where there are no streamgage records. In this study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with Colorado State University, the objectives were to model streamflow metrics on small, ungaged streams in the Upper Colorado River Basin and identify streams that are potentially threatened with becoming intermittent under drier climate conditions. The Upper Colorado River Basin is a region that is critical for water resources and also projected to experience large future climate shifts toward a drying climate. A random forest modeling approach was used to model the relationship between streamflow...

The Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) has conducted an ecological assessment of various landscape characteristics, or endpoints, outlined in the LCC Integrated Science Agenda. This data layer addresses the forested wetland amount desired landscape endpoint for the forested wetland ecosystem in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley subgeography of the GCPO LCC. This data was created by reclassification of the 2011 National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) to pull out only the woody wetlands class (90) from the NLCD dataset. We then overlaid the HUC12 watershed layer and calculated the total amount of forested wetland acreage within each watershed.

Temporal dynamics of each GCPO priority system are recognized as important contributors to the overall system integrity. The Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) alludes to the desired condition that forest structure should be dominated by mature upland hardwood stands across the greater landscape. However, to ensure future forest sustainability a small portion (≤10% of the landscape) should be in a state of regeneration, or early forest succession. The ISA provides this endpoint as a general target, but lacks specificity regarding the desired composition of forest stand ages because there is limited literature available that assesses upland hardwood stand age from an ecosystem integrity perspective. Priority wildlife...

Future climate change may significantly alter the distributions of many plant taxa. The effects of climate change may be particularly large in mountainous regions where climate can vary significantly with elevation. Understanding potential future vegetation changes in these regions requires methods that can resolve vegetation responses to climate change at fine spatial resolutions. This research was projected using three models: cgcm31, hadley, and current. We used LPJ, a dynamic global vegetation model, to assess potential future vegetation changes for a large topographically complex area of the northwest United States and southwest Canada (38.0–58.0°N latitude by 136.6–103.0°W longitude). LPJ is a process-based...

This dataset consists of point features identifying indices for potential passage rate at intersections with major transportation corridors for grizzly bear movements between the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) and Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE) in the northwestern United States. Points are spaced at 300-meter intervals along major road corridors (interstates and U.S. highways) and are populated with values from Randomized Shortest Path (RSP) predictive raster models of potential male grizzly bear movement between the two ecosystems as described in Peck et al. 2016 (Potential paths for male-mediated gene flow to and from an isolated grizzly bear population, Ecosphere 8(10):e01969). RSP scores extracted...
A summary data set of all fire polygons we could locate as of December 2007. We used multiple datasets to develop this layer, including data gathered from the internet, publically available databases, and personal contacts with dozens of agency personnel throught the western U.S. Data were assessed for utility (but not accuracy) and formatted for consistency. Each source data set was then attributed consistently with fields for record number and year (of fire). Because various resource management entities map fires somewhat independently (especially in more recent years) we merged overlapping polygons for each year. Users are encouraged to understand the contents of this data file before using it.

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment utilized expert opinion that was gathered through the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value (SIVVA) tool, which is an Excel-based vulnerability and prioritization tool that enables assessors to provide input in a relatively short time and allows for relatively seamless compilation of results. The vulnerability of each ecosystem and associated species was conducted by subregion, excluding those subregions where the species did not occur in significant numbers. Assessors were asked to evaluate species based on the habitats they use in a particular subregion. Because vulnerability can vary with life-stage for many species, assessors were asked to consider the most vulnerable...

This R code uses the nest card data (“Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”), cumulative observer experience data (“cumnest.csv”), and the output from the detection model to produce nest population estimates for focal species or species groups. Model results used are the the maximum likelihood estimates and covariance matrix from Program Mark for “model 7” or from a Bayesian posterior distribution based on a generalized linear mixed model for detection with random effects for plot, year, and crew. Results from “model 7” are produced only to provide population estimates based on legacy methods as reported in past reports. For final estimates, results from the Bayesian posterior should be used. Result from either model cannot...

The Spectacled Recovery Plan identified annual nesting surveys as the primary method to assess recovery status for Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) subpopulation. In addition to documenting population status for spectacled eiders, the survey provides annual information on egg production, nesting effort, phenology, and habitat use for three other focal species including cackling geese, emperor geese, and greater white-fronted geese. Numbers of nests of the four species are stable or increasing in the short-term (2007-2016) and long-term (1985-2016). In 2016, the estimated number of spectacled eider nests (9,464) was the second highest in the history of the survey, but nest success was poor and clutch size very...

This collection of reports are summaries of annual aerial surveys of molting geeze conducted near Teshekpuk Lake beginning in 2003. Annual reports completed for surveys conducted prior to 2003 are not in digital format. To access to these, please contact Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region Waterfowl Department (USFWS) directly. Because not all reports were completed within the same year as the corresponding aerial surveys, file naming format for each report was standardized to: [YYYY] _ [author] _ [(coauthor)] _ briefDescription. All markdown code used to produce reports starting in 2016 can be found here and is also located on the Alaska Regional Data Repository (GitHub_Annual_Report_Code folder).

The role of lynx dispersal in maintaining their populations at the landscape scale is unclear. A large proportion of local lynx populations are known to disperse following a snowshoe hare population crash, but whether these dispersal events contribute to the cyclic dynamics of neighboring populations is not well understood. If lynx dispersal does play an important role in lynx population dynamics then the conservation of dispersal corridors is critical to maintaining those dynamics. However, we currently have no information on the habitat requirements of dispersing lynx in relation to human land use, such as housing developments, road building, timber harvest, and mining, all of which could have a substantial impact...

The Lakewide Management Plans (LaMPs) within the Great Lakes region are examples of broad-scale, collaborative resource-management efforts that require a sound ecosystems approach. Yet, the LaMP process is lacking a holistic framework that allows these individual actions to be planned and understood within the broader context of the Great Lakes ecosystem. To help this issue, a conceptual framework for Lake Michigan Coastal/Nearshore Ecosystems was developed to address for major LaMP goals; Can we drink the water?, Can we eat the fish?, Can we swim in the water?, Are all habitats healthy, naturally diverse, and sufficient to sustain viable biological communities?
