This dataset was last updated 02/2017. This version includes a new tidal restrictions metric that assesses the effect of undersized culverts and bridges on tidal regime. The previous version (3.1) was updated on 05/2016 by incorporating a revised version of the land cover classification, DSLland Version 3.1, developed by UMass, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. Ecological integrity is defined as the ability of an area (e.g., local site or landscape) to sustain...
This cultural resource indicator is an index of sites on the National Register of Historic Places surrounded by limited urban development. It identifies significant historic places that remain connected to their context in the natural world.Reason for SelectionLow-urban historic landscapes indicate significant cultural landscapes whose cultural context has been less impacted by urban growth. Cultural landscapes are “properties [that] represent the combined works of nature and of man” (UNESCO 2012). Reductions in natural habitat within these cultural landscapes reduce their overall historic and cultural value.Input DataThe National Register of Historic Places reflects what Americans value in their historic built...

The SRLCC provided funds to the states of Arizona and New Mexico to support development of the states Crucial Habitat Assessment Tools (CHATs) which provide a decision support system to better incorporate wildlife values, sensitive animals and plants, and important ecosystem features into land use decision-making to reduce conflicts and surprises.Several states have released wildlife mapping tools that are the foundation for displaying crucial wildlife and corridor information. The state and regional CHATs are non-regulatory, and give project planners and the general public access to credible scientific data on a broad scale for use in project analysis, siting and planning. This includes large-scale development...

This indicator is a continuous index of highly productive areas for birds that feed exclusively or mainly at sea. It uses seasonal predictions of relative abundance for sixteen species of marine birds. Note: This indicator is at a 200 m resolution, which is coarser than other indicators used in the 2020 Blueprint.Reason for SelectionMarine birds help identify key areas of ocean productivity and overall ocean health, are regularly monitored, and resonate with a variety of audiences. This indicator complements the marine mammal index by providing finer spatial resolution and stronger connections to forage fish productivity.Input Data– Blueprint 2.1 ecosystem map (see Appendix A)– Potential species to include in this...
This indicator is an index of habitat suitability for twelve upland hardwood and forested wetland bird species based on patch size and other ecosystem characteristics such as proximity to water and proximity to forest and ecotone edge.Reason for SelectionThis index represents a variety of ecosystem features and is already being modeled and monitored for the entire region by the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture. The needs of these forest bird species are increasingly restrictive at higher index values, reflecting better quality habitat.Input Data– Southeast GAP species models:Chuck-will’s widow (bCWWI)Red-headed woodpecker (bRHWO)Wood Thrush (bWOTH)Whip-poor-will (bWPWI)American Woodcock (bAMWO)Hooded Warbler (bHOWA)Kentucky...

This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. This layer also contains information about potential habitats based on the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings data layer. This layer was developed to support the next iteration of the Conservation Blueprint developed by the...

This indicator represents the size of large, unfragmented patches of natural habitat. It identifies minimally disturbed natural areas at least 100 acres in size and greater than 200 meters wide.Reason for SelectionLarge areas of intact natural habitat are favorable for conservation of numerous species, including reptiles and amphibians, birds, and large mammals. The Esri Green Infrastructure data covers the entire United States and has been used in other broad-scale conservation planning efforts, so using this existing data helps align the Blueprint with other conservation efforts and reduce duplication of effort. We chose to use “Core Size (acres)” as the metric for this indicator. Other evaluation attributes included...

This cultural resource indicator measures both the natural condition and connected length of greenways and trails to characterize the quality of the recreational experience. Natural condition is based on the amount of impervious surface surrounding the path. Connected length captures how far a person can go without leaving a dedicated path, based on common distances for walking, running, and biking.Reason for SelectionThis indicator captures the recreational value and opportunities to connect with nature provided by greenways and trails. Greenways and trails provide many well-established social and economic benefits (ITRE 2018).Monitoring ApproachLocations of greenways and trails are regularly updated through the...
