The karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers are classified as major sources of water in south-central Texas by the Texas Water Development Board, and both are classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The purpose of this data release is to present the data that were collected and compiled to describe the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy within parts of Bandera and Kendall Counties, Texas, in order to help water managers, water purveyors, and local residents better understand and manage water resources. The scope of the larger work and this accompanying data release is focused on the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the outcrops and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers within...

Supporting datasets for the associated journal publication "Towards reproducible environmental modeling for decision support: a worked example". Includes source codes for the version of PEST++ and MODFLOW-2005 used, the pyEMU and FloPy python modules and the driver script "eaa.py". Also included are the existing MODFLOW-2005 models supplied the Edwards Aquifer Authority
Continuous monitoring and discrete water-quality sampling were coupled in a karst aquifer to assess drivers and timescales of water-quality change. Water-quality data included environmental tracers of groundwater age (tritium [3H], tritiogenic helium-3 [3He-trit], sulfur hexafluoride [SF6], carbon-14 [14C], and radiogenic helium-4 [4He-rad]). All water quality data is available from the U.S. Geological Survey NWIS database (U.S. Geological Survey, 2019). Groundwater ages were estimated by calibration of environmental tracers to lumped parameter models of groundwater age for multiple samples collected at six groundwater wells using the program TracerLPM (Jurgens and others, 2012). The final estimates for mean groundwater...
The Edwards and Trinity aquifers are major sources of water in south-central Texas and are both classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The population in Hays and Comal Counties is rapidly growing, increasing demands on the area's water resources. To help effectively manage the water resources in the area, refined maps and descriptions of the geologic structures and hydrostratigraphic units (HSUs) of the aquifers are needed. This digital map database presents the detailed 1:24,000-scale bedrock hydrostratigraphic map as well as names and descriptions of the geologic and hydrostratigraphic units of the Driftwood and Wimberley 7.5-minute quadrangles in Hays and Comal Counties, Tex. These digital data...

The Edwards aquifer is a karst aquifer system that is a primary water source for a large part of central Texas including the city of San Antonio, Texas. These vector geospatial data represent the geographic extent of the contributing zones for the Northern, Barton Springs, and San Antonio segments of the Edwards aquifer. The contributing zone is defined as the drainage area of the Edwards Plateau that contributes surface water to the Edwards aquifer recharge zone. The recharge zone is where surface water and precipitation infiltrate into the outcrop of the rocks that compose the aquifer (see Ashworth and Hopkins, 1995, and George and others, 2011). The Edwards and Trinity aquifers are major sources of water for agriculture, industry, and urban and rural communities in south-central Texas. Both the Edwards and Trinity aquifers are classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The dissolution of the carbonate rocks composing the Edwards and Trinity aquifers results in distinctive landforms rich in both springs and karst features (caves, sinkholes, and other visible areas of solution-enlarged porosity). Previous studies such as those by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) have mapped the geology, hydrostratigraphy, and structure in these areas at various scales. The purpose of this data release is to present...

This data release supports the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigation Map (SIM) by Clark and others (2020) by documenting the data used to create the geologic maps and describes the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers for a 442 square-mile area in northern Medina County in south Texas. The karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers that are the subject of the SIM by Clark and others (2020) are classified as major sources of water in south-central Texas by the Texas Water Development Board (George and others, 2011). The geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers largely control groundwater flow paths and storage in northern Medina County...
Groundwater samples collected from the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas were analyzed for water-quality data to assess aquifer susceptibility to contaminants. Water-quality data included environmental tracers of groundwater age (tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon-14, and radiogenic helium-4), calibrated to lumped parameter models (LPMs). Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells, domestic-supply wells, and public-supply wells during 2017 and 2018. This data release includes seven tables detailing these data. The final estimates for mean groundwater ages determined for samples from 65 wells ranged from 4 years to 45,400 years, with a median of 25 years. Table 1 provides...
Between 2012 and 2015, water-quality samples were collected by the USGS in cooperation with the Clearwater Underground Water Conservation District (CUWCD), the Bell County Adaptive Management Coalition (BCAMC), and other entities, with a primary goal of characterizing the groundwater resources in Bell County, Texas. Water resources associated with the northern segment of the Edwards aquifer near the Village of Salado were of primary interest, but water resources in the Trinity aquifer were also investigated to a lesser degree (the assessment focused on a springs complex in the Village of Salado). Data associated with other water quality samples collected by the USGS in Bell County during 1978 to 2017, outside of...
The Texas Water Development Board classifies the karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers as major sources of water in south-central Texas. To effectively manage the water resources in the area, detailed maps and descriptions of the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphic units of the aquifers outcropping in Hays County, Tex. are needed. In 2016 and 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Edwards Aquifer Authority, mapped the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers within Hays County, Tex. at 1:24,000 scale. These digital data accompany Clark, A.K., Pedraza, D.E., and Morris, R.R., 2018, Geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers...

IMPORTANT NOTE: A more recent version of this data release is available from this link. The Edwards aquifer in south central Texas is one of the most permeable and productive aquifers in the United States and is the major source of public water supply for Bexar, Comal, Hays, Medina, and Uvalde Counties. The Edwards aquifer also supplies large quantities of water to agriculture, business, and industry in the region. The major artesian springs of the Edwards aquifer provide water for recreational activities, businesses, and downstream users, and provide habitat for several threatened or endangered species. The areas pertinent to the recharge process are the catchment area and the recharge zone. The catchment area...
