In a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, detectable concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were found in the soil at every site despite targeting locations with no known PFAS sources (Santangelo and others, 2022). The widespread distribution of PFAS concentrations in New Hampshire has since sparked critical interest into understanding whether recharge to groundwater contains significant concentrations of PFAS after infiltration through soils. During November 2018, the Camp Fire burned more than 150,000 acres in Butte County, California. The fire was the deadliest and most destructive in California history, destroying more than 18,000 structures and causing at least 85 fatalities. The U.S. Geological Survey sampled surface water in areas affected by the Camp Fire, plus an unburned control site, during two post-fire sampling events, January 21-23, 2019 and February 28 - March 1, 2019. During each of those two sampling events, surface-water samples were collected at 8 stream locations. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and related chemical and physical data are presented from 100 shallow soil sampling locations within the State of New Hampshire. Sites were randomly determined through an equal-area grid approach (Scott, 1990) targeting undisturbed areas, which included lands classified by the 2016 National Land Cover Database (Dewitz, 2019) as forested, shrubland, scrubland, grassland, herbaceous, wetlands, or barren land. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides surface water quality and groundwater elevation data collected by USGS personnel within the Central Pine Barrens (CPB) Region of Suffolk County, New York, from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022. Here we report optical data collected as part of a collaborative study between USGS Pennsylvania Water Science Center, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Water Mission Area Proxies Project. The optical measurements reported here were collected to aide in the characterization of water sources and mixtures and establish proxies (surrogates) for per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances within the Neshaminy Creek basin. Data are compiled into three tables: 1) full fluorescence spectra in vectorized format, 2) full absorbance spectra, and 3) summary file of commonly extracted optical indicators and field-based sensor arrays.

This dataset provides the estimated cell abundance and total biovolume for whole-water picoplankton samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at 25 different sites in Kansas between August of 2020 and August of 2022. The samples were analyzed by BSA Environmental Services, Inc. This data is part of a larger multi-agency project between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and USGS called the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN). The goal of the CyAN project is to develop a satellite-based, early warning system to detect harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater systems.

Climatic extremes are becoming more frequent with climate change and have the potential to cause major ecological shifts and ecosystem collapse. With the ecosystem collapse these normally healthy marshes fragment and convert to open water. Along the northern Gulf of Mexico, a coastal wetland in the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge in Texas suffered significant and acute vegetation dieback following Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Using Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) we acquired high resolution imagery to identify plant types that may correlate with elevation levels. Fine-sediment elemental chemistry and short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and Lead-210) were quantified to describe land-based sediment sources and runoff to Olowalu Reef in February 2022. Charcoal counts, total organic carbon contents, and 76 urban- and wildfire-associated contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified to explore urban and wildfire effects in watersheds above Olowalu Reef and in reef sediment. Sediment traps were deployed in thirty-three ephemeral and perennial tributaries to the San Juan River during 2021 and 2022. This dataset includes the chemical concentrations of the sediment samples collected in sediment traps during storm events. These traps collected sediment during storm events that typically occur as monsoonal convective storms from June to September. Because of the rural nature of the watershed, sediment traps were collected every 3 weeks so the sediment collected is a composite of that time period. The U.S. Geological Survey is monitoring metal concentrations in streambed sediment pre- and post-dam removal in the lower Klamath River basin. Concentrations of aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, nickel, lead, titanium, vanadium and zinc were sampled at 10 mainstem sites, four tributaries and two reservoirs. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were measured in the lower Ottawa River in 2009 before dredging and after dredging in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. However, numerous other biologically active contaminants, such as antibiotics and nitrification inhibitors, regularly co-occur with nitrate and many can affect the efficiency of nitrate removal. This data release documents time-series analyses of aqueous-chemistry data from public-supply wells (PSWs) and associated potential explanatory factors to characterize responses of groundwater quality to drought and recovery periods in California’s San Joaquin Valley (SJV) during 2000-2022. Annual median nitrate values were computed for PSWs throughout the SJV during the period of study. Median annual nitrate values were calculated at all PSWs with available data in the SJV, resulting in a total of 698 PSWs with complete annual records after single-year linear gap imputation.
