Land-water data was derived from imagery acquired at 350 feet using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for 6 separate study locations using the Ricoh GR II camera. Three sites are healthy marsh and three sites are degraded marshes. For each study site, ground control markers were established and surveyed in using Real Time Kinematic (RTK) survey equipment. The imagery collected has been processed to produce a land-water classification dataset for scientific research. The land-water data will not only quantify how much marsh is being affected, but the data will also provide a spatial aspect as to where these degrading marsh fragmentations are occurring. The land-water data will be correlated with other data such as salinity,...

This dataset is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Restoration Assessment (GLCWRA) initiative. These data represent the location of dikes within the Upper Peninsula Restoration Assessment (UPRA) study area. An ArcGIS model (Python script) identified dikes as having a difference in elevation above a certain threshold. If the elevation difference was below a certain threshold, the area was not considered a dike. However, if the difference in elevation between two points was significantly high, then the area was marked as a dike. Areas continuous with each other were considered part of the same dike. Data underwent quality control (QC) procedures by having Subject Matter Experts and...

The data represent a shallow mercury chronology using sediment core from a playa lake system situated in a high-altitude setting in northwest Argentina. Archive samples were used from sediment core (LP07-1A) that was collected from a location (lat -22.362100°, lon -66.003600°) in the center of the playa-lake Laguna de Pozuelos in the dry season of 2007, when the water level was 2 to 3 cm. The samples were taken over 1 to 2 cm intervals and had been dried and homogenized. Sediment total mercury analyses were conducted by digesting sediment (0.30 g) in boiling concentrated nitric/sulfuric acid (ratio 3:1), followed by 12 hour oxidation with bromine monochloride, tin chloride reduction, gold amalgamation, and detection...

A large spill of wastewater from oil and gas operations was discovered adjacent to Blacktail Creek near Williston, North Dakota in January 2015. To determine the effects of this spill on streambed microbial communities over time, bed sediment samples were taken from Blacktail Creek upstream, adjacent to, and at several locations downstream from the spill site. Blacktail Creek is a tributary of the Little Muddy River, and additional samples were taken upstream and downstream from the confluence of Blacktail Creek and the Little Muddy River. Samples were collected in February 2015, June 2015, June 2016, and June 2017. DNA was extracted from these sediments, and sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene was performed...

Mercury isotope measurements were made across nine sediments cores from remote North American lakes to examine changes in the Hg isotope profiles. The lakes spanned regions of Alaska, Minnesota, and Newfoundland as well as a range of temperate to arctic climates. This data describes the natural record of mass dependent (MDF) and mass independent (MIF) Hg isotope fractionation related to depositional changes over time. Mercury isotope measurements were also compared to factors such as latitude, precipitation, watershed size, and approximate age of sediment intervals. The companion article referencing this data set was published in Environmental Science and Technology and can be found at https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.0c00579.
