A large spill of wastewater from oil and gas operations was discovered adjacent to Blacktail Creek near Williston, North Dakota in January 2015. To determine the effects of this spill on streambed microbial communities over time, bed sediment samples were taken from Blacktail Creek upstream, adjacent to, and at several locations downstream from the spill site. Blacktail Creek is a tributary of the Little Muddy River, and additional samples were taken upstream and downstream from the confluence of Blacktail Creek and the Little Muddy River. Samples were collected in February 2015, June 2015, June 2016, and June 2017. DNA was extracted from these sediments, and sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene was performed...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides concentrations from groundwater and soil extracts for iron (Fe), barium (Ba), strontium (Sr), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni). Groundwater analyses for pH and alkalinity are also included. Samples were collected at the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site, near Bemidji MN (USA) between 2009-2019. The site is in Beltrami County, where a high-pressure pipeline carrying crude oil burst in 1979 and spilled approximately 1.7 million liters (10,700 barrels) into glacial outwash deposits. A trace element plume occurred at the site, in which concentrations of Fe, Co, Ni, Ba, and Sr were mobilized from the sediments into the groundwater....

Mercury isotope measurements were made across nine sediments cores from remote North American lakes to examine changes in the Hg isotope profiles. The lakes spanned regions of Alaska, Minnesota, and Newfoundland as well as a range of temperate to arctic climates. This data describes the natural record of mass dependent (MDF) and mass independent (MIF) Hg isotope fractionation related to depositional changes over time. Mercury isotope measurements were also compared to factors such as latitude, precipitation, watershed size, and approximate age of sediment intervals. The companion article referencing this data set was published in Environmental Science and Technology and can be found at https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.0c00579.

This dataset details mercury concentrations and mercury stable isotope values collected as part of an environmental mercury assessment encompassing the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers as well as two U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites. The Tensaw River was also sampled as part of this study as a reference site, absent of mercury contamination. As a part of this survey, sediments, waters, and biota (largemouth bass) were measured to assess mercury transport and bioaccumulation of mercury within the Mobile River Basin. High mercury concentrations and isotope values indicative of industrial contamination were found in sediments and fish of Superfund sites. Lower concentrations and isotope values indicative...

Data in this data release were obtained from water samples collected under Yellowstone National Park (YNP) Research Permit YELL-05194 in 2017, 2019, and 2020 through the Integrated Yellowstone Studies Project funded by the Mineral Resources Program. These samples were used to assess mercury cycling within YNP. Water samples were analyzed for total mercury and methylmercury, the bioaccumulated form in food webs. This data informs the biogeochemical processes controlling the broad range of mercury and methylmercury concentrations observed in the park. Natural abundance mercury stable isotopes were also collected to determine if mercury sources or cycling processes varied between different hydrothermal sources. Data...

Note: This data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Mercury (Hg) concentrations and isotopic compositions were collected in sediments, soils, and suspended particulate matter from Gruber's Grove Bay (GGB) and upstream reference sites to inform future remedial efforts. The highest concentrations and isotopic signatures (δ202Hg) were observed in soils collected from historic water settling ponds from the Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BAAP). Sediments from the upper portion of GGB showed higher isotopic compositions than sediments from the Wisconsin River. Hg concentrations in sediments were also higher in the upper portion of GGB and decreased towards the river. Sediments collected...

Upper Klamath Lake, located in southern Oregon, is a hypereutrophic lake where cyanobacterial blooms, dominated by Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), occur every summer. The decay of excess biomass after AFA senescence leads to problematic water quality conditions including high pH ( > 9) and anoxia. Water samples from the photic zone and bottom of the water column, and the flocculation layer of the bottom sediments were collected weekly at four sites within Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon during summer 2016. This data release reports the chemical and microbiological analysis of these samples.
