Airborne geophysical surveys were conducted in the eastern Adirondacks from Dec. 7, 2015 - Dec. 21, 2015, by Goldak Airborne Surveys. The area was flown along a draped surface with a nominal survey height above ground of 200 meters. The flight line spacing was 250 meters for traverse lines and 2500 meters for control lines. Here we present downloadable magnetic and radiometric (gamma spectrometry) data from those surveys as image (Geotiff) and flight line data (csv format). Background The Eastern Adirondacks region was known for iron mining in the 1800's and 1900's but it also contains deposits of rare earth minerals. Rare earth minerals are used in advanced technology such as in cell phones, rechargeable batteries...

Magnetic susceptibility was measured on outcropping rock in the eastern Adirondack Mountains, New York. A Terraplus KT-20 was used for the measurements. The corresponding rock type was identified using standard field geologic approaches. Locations of the outcrops were determined using a handheld GPS.

Digital flood-inundation maps for an approximately 295-mile length of the New Jersey coastline and tidewaters through 10-coastal counties stretching from Cumberland County through Bergen County; including Cumberland, Cape May, Atlantic, Ocean, Monmouth, Middlesex, Union, Essex, Hudson, and Bergen counties were created by the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM). The flood-inundation maps depict extent and depth estimates of coastal flooding corresponding to selected tidal elevations recorded by 25 real-time USGS tide gages located throughout the length of the study area coastline. The flood-inundation...

Radiometric (gamma spectrometry) measurements were made on outcropping rock and during walking surveys in the eastern Adirondack Highlands, New York using a GF Instruments Gamma Surveyor. Outcrop measurements were made over 2-minute intervals directly on rock. Walking surveys involved recording measurement averages over 30-second intervals while holding the instrument approximately 1 meter above the ground. Locations were obtained via a handheld GPS. For the outcrop measurements, rock types were identified using standard field methods. Walking surveys were conducted near magnetite-apatite deposits and in areas with mine tailings. For more information on radiometric methods, please see the International Atomic Energy...

This data release includes whole rock (WR) geochemical data, and uranium-lead isotopic data collected using a sensitive high resolution ion microprobe-reverse geometry (SHRIMP-RG) instrument; the SHRIMP-RG is a type of secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS). Whole rock geochemistry data were analyzed at Bureau Veritas Commodities Canada Ltd. Laboratories in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. SHRIMP-RG data were collected at the USGS-Stanford University SHRIMP-RG in Palo Alto, California, USA. Rock samples for all methods were collected by Phillip Geer, Sean Regan, and Greg Walsh. SHRIMP-RG sample preparation and analyses were conducted by Ryan McAleer. The whole rock geochemistry and uranium-lead (U-Pb) isotopic...

From July to November 2019, 48 environmental samples and four quality assurance and quality control samples were collected throughout the Lake Champlain and Susquehanna River Basins. Samples were collected from 10 production wells and nine domestic wells in the Lake Champlain Basin, and 14 production wells and 15 domestic wells in the Susquehanna River Basin. Of the total wells sampled, 24 were completed in bedrock and 23 were completed in sand and gravel. Approximately 20 percent of samples were collected from wells that previously have been sampled as part of this study in 2005, 2009, and 2014. Groundwater samples were collected prior to any treatment or filtration systems, from existing domestic and production...

From May to December 2017, 48 environmental samples and six quality control samples were collected throughout the Upper Hudson and Central New York River Basins. Samples were collected from nine production wells and 11 domestic wells in the Upper Hudson River Basin, and 14 production wells and 14 domestic wells in the Central New York River Basin. Of the total wells sampled, 22 were completed in bedrock and 26 were completed in sand and gravel. Approximately 20 percent of samples were collected from wells that were previously sampled as in 2007 and 2012. Groundwater samples were collected prior to any treatment or filtration systems, from existing domestic and production wells equipped with permanently installed...

The density of rock samples collected 2016-2017 from the eastern Adirondack Highlands in New York was measured in the laboratory using standard immersion methods. The corresponding rock type was identified using standard field geologic approaches. Rock locations were determined in the field using a handheld GPS.

Community composition data from multi-pass electrofishing surveys for assessing fish populations in headwater streams of the Adirondack Mountains, New York, USA. Each row represents one individual fish. This spreadsheet contains 11 columns. The first 7 columns describe the data (year collected, local site ID, stream name, latitude, longitude, USGS site number, and electrofishing pass number) and the remaining 4 columns describe each individual fish (common name, scientific name, total length (mm) and weight (g)). These data support the following publication: Baldigo, B.P., Sporn, L.A., George, S.D., and Ball, Jacob, 2017. Efficacy of environmental DNA to detect and quantify Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis, populations...

Gravity data were collected in 2016 and 2017 to assist in mapping subsurface geology in and around the eastern Adirondack highlands, northern New York, which host numerous iron-oxide apatite deposits. Many of these deposits contain rare-earth elements, which are considered a critical mineral resource. This data release provides principal facts for 189 new gravity stations that were acquired to fill in gaps in the existing public gravity data coverage.

This website provides digitized shapefiles representing surface geologic features depicted in Matthew S. Walton's unpublished 1960 geologic map of the Elizabethtown quadrangle, Essex County, New York. Features represented by these files include geologic units representing Precambrian basement rock, geologic structures, diabase dikes, mine shaft locations, and water bodies. The shape files in this data release represent Walton's original field observations and interpretations. Walton's detailed notes and a georegistered geotiff image of the original map are also included.
