The Western Native Fishes Committee's gallery in Data Basin contains 272 downloadable GIS layers showing fish habitat (current and historical) in the western U.S.
The purpose of this map is to provide a georeferenced characterization of vegetation in the early stages of Euro-American settlement. One of the research uses for the surveys nationally is for presettlement vegetation. This data can be used to analyze presettlement vegetation patterns for the purpose of determining natural community potential, productivity indexes, and patterns of natural disturbance. The area of the original plat maps were townships; use of the data at a larger scale would not be appropriate. In Illinois, the surveys began in 1804 and were largely completed by 1843. The surveyors moved across the state laying out a rectangular grid system, known as the Public Land Survey System (PLS or PLSS). They...

Monitoring 1-Changes in Plant and Animal Distribution: Fauna
Bottlenecks can have lasting effects on genetic population structure that obscure patterns of contemporary gene flow and drift. Sockeye salmon are vulnerable to bottleneck effects because they are a highly structured species with excellent colonizing abilities and often occupy geologically young habitats. We describe genetic divergence among and genetic variation within spawning populations of sockeye salmon throughout the Lake Clark area of Alaska. Fin tissue was collected from sockeye salmon representing 15 spawning populations of Lake Clark, Six-mile Lake, and Lake Iliamna. Allele frequencies differed significantly at 11 microsatellite loci in 96 of 105 pairwise population comparisons. Pairwise estimates of F...

Seasonal Movements and Habitat Use of Potamodromous Rainbow Trout Across a Complex Alaska Riverscape
Potamodromous Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss are an important ecological and recreational resource in freshwater ecosystems of Alaska, and increased human development, hydroelectric projects, and reduced escapement of Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha may threaten their populations. We used aerial and on-the-ground telemetry tracking, a digital landscape model, and resource selection functions to characterize seasonal movements and habitat use of 232 adult (>400 mm FL) Rainbow Trout across the complex, large (31,221 km2) Susitna River basin of south-central Alaska during 2003?2004 and 2013?2014. We found that fish overwintered in main-stem habitats near tributary mouths from November to April. After ice-out...

In the Yukon Territory, monitoring, protecting, and restoring salmon habitat in streams affected by placer gold mining are critical activities because salmon fisheries and placer gold mining have important economic and social values. To provide information to help develop new placer mining guidelines, I conducted a field study to (1) evaluate a new tool to monitor fish habitat in small streams, including streams affected by placer mining, and (2) determine the importance of large woody debris (LWD) in providing fish habitat in small, boreal forest streams. Thalweg profiles are longitudinal profiles of streambed elevation measured along the deepest portion of a stream. This technique has recently been suggested as...

Monitoring 1-Changes in Plant and Animal Distribution: Fauna
There is growing support for characterizing ecosystem services in order to link conservation and human well-being. However, few studies have explicitly included ecosystem services within systematic conservation planning, and those that have follow two fundamentally different approaches: ecosystem services as intrinsically-important targeted benefits vs. substitutable co-benefits. We present a first comparison of these two approaches in a case study in the Central Interior of British Columbia. We calculated and mapped economic values for carbon storage, timber production, and recreational angling using a geographical information system (GIS). These 'marginal' values represent the difference in service-provision between...
This report presents sport fisheries season and management summaries for 2012 with preliminary information for 2013 in the Kuskokwim-Goodnews Management Area. The Kuskokwim-Goodnews Management Area (KGMA) consists of all waters of the Kuskokwim River drainage, Kuskokwim Bay, and waters extending from the Naskonat Peninsula in the north to the south side of Cape Newenham in the south. Sport and subsistence fisheries target all 5 Pacific salmon species, as well as rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma, sheefish Stenodus leucichthys, Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus and northern pike Esox lucius. In 2012, angler-days totaled 20,645 with the largest proportion coming from the Kanektok River...

"Biological, climatological, and hydrological data were collected from Clear Creek-Hogatza River from 1995 to 1997. A counting tower and partial weir were constructed to estimate chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). Partial hour counts were tested to see if they adequately estimated full hour counts. Chi-square tests indicated all estimates based on partial hour counts differed significantly from hour counts. ANOVA indicated no partial hour count differed significantly from the hour counts. Relative error analysis showed counts greater than 20 minutes produced unbiased estimates of hour counts. The three year estimated average was 96,932 salmon with the average peak occurring on 3 July. A 1:1 sex ratio existed with...
