Hydroacoustic estimates of fish density are used for fisheries management in central Lake Erie. Hydroacoustic data were collected along up to four cross-lake transects in central Lake Erie July 2010 through July 2019. Software-generated raw variables used for calculating estimates of hydroacoustic fish densities are presented here.

Species occurrence records of the taxonomic class of Bivalvia in oceans within 1000 kilometers of the United States shoreline. This is a subset of the OBIS-USA dataset where Bivalvia records were queried on December 2, 2014. After initial queries, the remaining data were further queried to retain only samples within 1000 kilometers of the U.S. shoreline. Spatial queries were then used to remove samples overlaying land masses. Data are provided in a geodatabase format, as well as a comma seperated values format. OBIS-USA provides aggregated, interoperable biogeographic data collected primarily from U.S. waters and oceanic regions--the Arctic, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and...

Fisheries monitoring data detailing the lengths and or ages of fish caught during state agency fisheries surveys. These data were collected and shared with our team from: Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Data include length and age data for seven sport fish species: black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), northern pike (Esox lucius), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), walleye (Sander vitreus),...

Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9DSOPHD. The U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat) contains data compiled from 14,766 creel and angler surveys conducted by state natural resource management agencies (including Washington DC and Puerto Rico) in inland waters across the United States. Data is are contained in eight .csv files which contain information about survey characteristics (Survey_Data.csv), angler effort (AngEffort_Data.csv), catch and harvest (FishDataCompiled.csv), angler demographics (Demographic_Data.csv), angler preferences (AngPrefDataCompiled.csv), taxonomic classifications (Taxa_Data.csv), issues with catch and...

Since 2005, the U.S. Geological Survey - Great Lakes Science Center's Lake Erie Biological Station (LEBS) has participated in a collaborative, multiagency effort to assess pelagic prey fish populations in the western (WB), central (CB), and eastern (EB) basins of Lake Erie through a combination of hydroacoustic and midwater trawl sampling. Assessing lake-wide distribution and abundance of pelagic prey species over time facilitates evaluation of large-scale drivers of fish production while also considering food-web dynamics at a smaller sub-basin scale. Information from this survey will support decision making within an ecosystem-based fishery management framework. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management,...

These data were derived from hydroacoustic data collected by uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) and powered research vessels. The powered vessels overtook the USVs in Lakes Huron and Michigan to study fish avoidance of survey vessels during traditional acoustic surveys. The water column was divided into three depth groups (epilimnion, metalimnion, hypolimnion) for analysis. Each drone transect was binned into 30-sec intervals and measured hydroacoustic values were averaged in this region. To compare vessels and drones, parallel overtakes (overtakes where vessel and drone followed the same path) which were ~2 km long, were measured by both platforms and the differences between acoustic measures compared.

Cisco and Bloater growth data from hatchery reared fish were collected in association with a project to repopulate Lake Ontario native prey species. Fish were grown and measured under hatchery conditions for up to nine months before being released into Lake Ontario. Weekly measurements of total length, total weight, and morphometrics were recorded for both species to determine growth during their first year of growth for eight separate year-classes, 2012-2019.

4+ year old cisco (Coregonus artedi) pre-spawn and spawning/near-spawning behavioral data were collected and compiled at the Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science in Cortland, NY USA, between August-October 2021 and November-December 2021. Data are comprised of fish reactions in choice flume video data (attractance/avoidance). Cisco were exposed/not exposed to an imprinting chemical (amino acids: alanine, histidine, morpholine, proline, and serine) through early life stages, and later tested based on their treatment to see how individuals reacted to the presence of exposure chemicals during subsequent life stages. These data show how the adult stage cisco of this study ((non exposed (control) and treatment (amino...

These data consist of down-looking images of Lake Michigan benthos, collected in 2020 and 2021 with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Information about each image (i.e., latitude, longitude, depth from surface, altitude, roll, pitch, yaw, and creation time) can be found in the associated csv file. Substrate type was divided into 9 classes based on the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) and each image was assigned a substrate class by at least 3 trained labelers.

Great Lakes fishery managers and stakeholders have little information regarding how climate change could affect the management and conservation of fish populations, including those of high recreational and commercial value. Scientists from the US Geological Survey (USGS) worked closely with state management agencies and the National Wildlife Federation to complete several objectives that provide knowledge to aid their planning and management strategies in anticipation of coming changes. First, researchers updated a regional Great Lakes climate model to predict water level changes, water temperatures, and ice cover data for the entire Great Lakes basin 50-100 years into the future. Second, researchers used satellite...

Hydroacoustic estimates of fish density are used for fisheries management in central Lake Erie. Hydroacoustic data were collected along 8, randomly-selected, 5-kilometer transects and three transects between the US shore and the international border in central Lake Erie in July 2020. Software-generated raw variables used for calculating estimates of hydroacoustic fish densities are presented here. These data are related to a longer-term data set from 2010-2019.

Hydroacoustic estimates of fish density are used for fisheries management in central Lake Erie. Hydroacoustic data were collected along 10, randomly-selected, 5-kilometer transects and two cross-basin transects between the US and Canadian shorelines in central Lake Erie during July 2021. Software-generated raw variables were used for calculating estimates of hydroacoustic fish densities presented here in tabular form. These data are related to a longer-term data set from 2010-2019, and a data set from 2020.

Subadult and smolt behavioral data were compiled by Ali Mokdad from Trevor Pitcher's lab at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Data are comprised of fish reactions in choice flume video data (attractance/avoidance) collected by Jeremy Kraus at Tunison Lab of Aquatic Science, August 2021 and February 2020 respectively. Atlantic salmon were exposed/not exposed to imprinting chemical (morpholine) through early life stages and later tested based on their treatment to see how individuals react to the presence of exposure chemicals during subsequent life stages. These data show how the adult stage Atlantic salmon of this study ((non exposed (control) and treatment (morpholine exposed)) react to timed exposure...
