Degree of disruption of fish runs, by freshwater ecoregion. The level of disruption of fish runs was determined by Reidy-Liermann, C. A., C. Nilsson, J. Robertson, and R. Ng (unpublished) by calculating the average proportion of undammed distance among the longest connected freshwater pathways (including lakes) in each ecoregion, regardless of stream order. This metric considered only the five longest water courses or river segments between or without dams. Depending on the confidence in the underlying dam and reservoir data, ecoregions without known dams may have been deemed either as fully free-flowing or as having insufficient data. When dams data were deemed unreliable for a river, those dams were excluded...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides phytoplankton data collected from Stagecoach Reservoir, Colorado, during the summer months, July through September, of 2017 and 2018. The data were collected by the USGS, in cooperation with the Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality-assurance and quality-control samples collected at the sampling site on Stagecoach Reservoir at Dam (USGS site 401707106495800). Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density) and biovolume are reported.
On April 13, 2015, the Great Basin LCC hosted a webinar about new Sage-Grouse conservation data presented by the National Wetlands Inventory.Nevada’s wetlands are important havens for local wildlife. Past and current changes in climate and land use practices have stressed many sensitive wetland systems across Nevada, putting the wildlife they support at risk. For greater sage-grouse, wetlands also play an important role in providing brood rearing habitat. This project is mapping areas of high priority sage grouse habitat in Nevada and will move towards mapping areas of other wetlands in future years with additional funding. Mapping of other important landscapes such as upland riparian habitat are also part of this...
Freshwater biodiversity, from fish to frogs and microbes to macrophytes, provides a vast array of services to people. Mounting concerns focus on the accelerating pace of biodiversity loss and declining ecological function within freshwater ecosystems that continue to threaten these natural benefits. Here, we catalog nine fundamental ecosystem services that the biotic components of indigenous freshwater biodiversity provide to people, organized into three categories: material (food; health and genetic resources; material goods), non-material (culture; education and science; recreation), and regulating (catchment integrity; climate regulation; water purification and nutrient cycling). If freshwater biodiversity is...
Freshwater biodiversity loss is accelerating globally, but humanity can change this trajectory through actions that enable recovery. To be successful, these actions require coordination and planning at a global scale. The Emergency Recovery Plan for global freshwater biodiversity aims to reduce the risk for freshwater biodiversity loss through six priority actions: (1) accelerate implementation of environmental flows; (2) improve water quality to sustain aquatic life; (3) protect and restore critical habitats; (4) manage exploitation of freshwater species and riverine aggregates; (5) prevent and control nonnative species invasions in freshwater habitats; and (6) safeguard and restore freshwater connectivity. These...
