In 2014, total well depths for groundwater wells in California were extracted from digital copies of well completion reports provided to the U.S. Geological Survey by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). This digital dataset contains 16,912 well depths for domestic, municipal, irrigation, industrial, and agricultural wells that were overlying oil and gas fields or within 5 kilometers of a field boundary. Wells were attributed with approximate location, well use, and depth using information provided by DWR, and were attributed with land surface elevations using the California National Elevation Dataset. Wells were also attributed with the nearest oil and gas field using the California Division of Oil,...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through September 2017. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe the potential for cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundances (density reported as natural units) are reported.

All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. This data release was produced in compliance with the open data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at the long-term sampling site on Cheney Reservoir located near the dam (USGS station identification number 07144790). Zooplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level...

Number of globally threatened freshwater mammal, bird, and crocodilian species, by freshwater ecoregion. We generated the map of number of freshwater mammals, birds, and crocodilian species per ecoregion that are threatened with extinction from multiple sources, including species range maps, as well as geographic range descriptions from literature and online sources (our primary sources are listed below). Threatened species refer to those listed by IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered (www.redlist.org). We added together the numbers of threatened species for each of the taxonomic groups by ecoregion. When species range maps were used and a range overlapped several ecoregions, species...

Number of freshwater endemic species, by freshwater ecoregion. The map of the number of freshwater endemic species shows the number of endemic fish, freshwater turtles, crocodiles, and amphibians found in each freshwater ecoregion. To calculate the total number of endemic species by ecoregion, we simply added the number of endemic species in these four taxonomic groups. Fish endemics are from Abell et al. (2008). Extirpated fish species are included in these tallies, but resolved extinct species, as determined by the Committee on Recently Extinct Organisms, and introduced species are excluded. Data on amphibian species were generated from distribution maps for 5,640 amphibian species gathered by the Global Amphibian...
The management of water resources in arid and semiarid areas has long been a challenge, from ancient Mesopotamia to the modern southwestern United States. As our understanding of the hydrological and climatological cycles has improved, and our ability to manipulate the hydrologic cycle has increased, so too have the challenges associated with managing a limited natural resource for a growing population. Modern civilization has made remarkable progress in water management in the past few centuries. Burgeoning cities now survive in desert regions, relying on a mix of simple and complex technologies and management systems to bring adequate water and remove wastewater. These systems have permitted agricultural production...

This dataset contains the non-freshwater specimens from the Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS) database, which was established as a central repository for spatially referenced biogeographic accounts of introduced aquatic species. This dataset does not include any marine fish. The NAS program provides scientific reports, online/real-time queries, spatial data sets, regional contact lists, and general information. The data is made available for use by biologists, interagency groups, and the general public. The geographical coverage is the United States.

The depth to top of perforated intervals and depth to base of freshwater for oil and gas injection wells in California were compiled from an Access database provided by the California Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) in February 2015 as a retrieval from the California Well Information Management System (CalWIMS) database for Underground Injection Control (UIC) wells. This digital dataset contains 19,322 records for injection wells, of which 17,278 wells have a recorded depth to top of perforated intervals and 5,248 wells have a recorded depth to base of freshwater. The original dataset included the depths, American Petroleum Institute (API) numbers, oil and gas field, and well location. Wells...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides the phytoplankton tally sheet, including photomicrographs, for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through September 2017. All data are raw tallies, not calculated abundances or concentrations. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe the potential for cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin ocurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundances (density reported as natural units) are reported.

Global climate change is altering the natural state of the earth. Ecosystems around the world are being affected with a large concern being the availability of freshwater. As a result of climate change Hawaiʻi is predicted to experience a significant decrease in precipitation. And although Hawaiʻi is not currently experiencing unavailability of freshwater resources the focus of this study is to begin to understand one of the most abundant freshwater resources in Hawaiʻi, freshwater springs. Three approaches were used to begin understanding the freshwater springs in Keaukaha, HI; reading through literature, conducting field surveys as well as conducting informal interviews. Through the field surveys it was found...

There are 487 onshore oil and gas fields in California encompassing 3,392 square miles of aggregated area. The California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) initiated a Regional Monitoring Program (RMP) in July 2015, intended to determine where and to what degree groundwater quality may be at potential risk to contamination related to oil and gas development activities including well stimulation, well integrity issues, produced water ponds, and underground injection. The first step in monitoring groundwater in and near oil and gas fields is to prioritize the 487 fields using consistent statewide analysis of available data that indicate potential risk of groundwater to oil and gas development....

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides vertical profiles of water-quality data collected from two sites in Milford Lake, Kansas, August 24-25, 2017. Data are rounded to USGS significant figures. A multiparameter water-quality sonde was used to measure water temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and dissolved organic matter fluorescence. Photosynthetically active radiation was measured using a spherical underwater quantum sensor during each sample collection with daylight present. Vertical profiles were collected approximately 75 minutes apart and alternated between the two sites. This data release was produced in...

Freshwater fishes are globally among the most imperiled major biodiversity groups and they are especially endangered in the North American deserts of the vast binational Desert LCC. Sixty seven native fish species of conservation concern are in the study area, which includes all of the DLCC in both the US and Mexico. Essentially all species in our study area are understudied and management of them has been greatly impeded by the intrinsic difficulties of working internationally and by relative lack of, or inaccessibility to, basic knowledge about their distributions and conservation status. We propose to mine data from all online and known US-based institutions holding specimen-based occurrence records from our...
