Attempts to stabilize the shore can greatly influence rates of shoreline change. Beach nourishment in particular will bias rates of observed shoreline change toward accretion or stability, even though the natural beach, in the absence of nourishment, would be eroding. Trembanis and Pilkey (1998) prepared a summary of identifiable beach nourishment projects in the Gulf Coast region that had been conducted before 1996. Those records were used to identify shoreline segments that had been influenced by beach nourishment. Supplemental information regarding beach nourishment was collected from agencies familiar with nourishment projects in the State. All records were compiled to create a GIS layer depicting the spatial...

This is the GeoPackage (“TMG_AdditionalArea_Trans.gpkg”) that contains the layer (“main.TMG_Area_Trans”) depicting the spatial extent of the four Additional Survey Area transects that are surveyed during the annual MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial surveys. This GeoPackage (NAD83; ESPG: 3338) was created by Michael Swain in August 2021 and subsequently emailed to Maggie Harings. It includes waterbody units, waterbody types, and waterbody perimeter as well as their areas.Transects do not exist for Cape Simpson as this area is adequately assessed by conducting aerial surveys for lakes only. Piasuk River Delta area is surveyed using a combination of aerial lake surveys and transects. Colville River Delta and Atigaru...

This is an incomplete collection of track files produced during the MBM-AK TLSA molting goose survey flights. They reference latitude, longitude, and time in total seconds in the day. These files are called by R code (‘TMGSurvey_Master_2019.Rmd’ located in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’). Following review of this code, it appears as though these transcripts were not ultimately used in any way. Please consult ‘TMGSurvey_Master_2019.Rmd’ for additional context. Track file naming format is as follows: ‘TR[date][firstInitialLastNameOfObserver].csv’; HWilson refers to Heather Wilson while BShults refers to Brad Shults.

This is the collection of raw data was collected during MBM-AK TLSA annual molting goose surveys. Partial quality control has been completed for these data: following each survey, the observer listened to their survey recording that documented counts along transects and then transcribed these findings into these raw datasets (‘raw_data’). The observer listened to their recording a second time in order to confirm that their transcriptions were correct. Further quality control and tidying was completed for these raw data using R scripts noted by the file extension ‘.Rmd’ located in the ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’ folder. Ultimately, these scripts produced final datasets (‘final_data’) containing data used in annual...

A combination of citizen science inventories and expert assessments will be used to collect critical baseline information on known spring and seep resources using the Spring Ecosystem Inventory and Assessment Protocols and adapting them as needed for the unique arid Sky Island ecosystems. The assessment will collect information on channel morphology, riparian and wetland vegetation, water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and wildlife. This information will be combined with historic data from cooperating agencies (Pima County, Santa Cruz County, USFS, NPA, USGS, USFWS, BLM, and AGFD) in a regional, on-line database to provide a landscape level context for managing resources, which was previously unavailable due...

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment (GCVA) used an expert opinion approach to qualitatively assess the vulnerability of four ecosystems: mangrove, oyster reef, tidal emergent marsh, and barrier islands, and a suite of wildlife species that depend on them. More than 50 individuals participated in the completion of the GCVA, facilitated via Ecosystem and Species Expert Teams. The GCVA made use of the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value Assessment (SIVVA) (Reece and Noss 2014) to provide an objective framework for evaluating vulnerability by guiding assessors through a series of questions related to the changes an ecosystem or species might experience due to climate change and other threats. Assessors...

Sky Island Alliance will develop science and conservation-based guidance to assist natural resource managers in responding to expected climate change and other stressors on springs ecosystems in sky island regions of the Desert LCC. The project will result in publication of an Arizona Springs Restoration Handbook, which will aid managers in directing limited resources to preserve these key water resources and species that depend on them.

This project will be focused on hosting 2-3 workshops in 2013 to train people to conduct the Springs Stewardship Institute’s spring assessment protocol and promote it as a standardized method. This will facilitate standardized data collection across the landscape that can contribute to a broad-scale inventory and assessment of springs, seeps, and aquatic resources throughout the Desert LCC.

There are critical needs for a nationwide compilation of reliable shoreline data. To meet these needs, the USGS has produced a comprehensive database of digital vector shorelines by compiling shoreline positions from pre-existing historical shoreline databases and by generating historical and modern shoreline data. Shorelines are compiled by state and generally correspond to one of four time periods: 1800s, 1920s-1930s, 1970s, and 1998-2002. Each shoreline may represent a compilation of data from one or more sources for one or more dates provided by one or more agencies. Details regarding source are provided in the ‘Data Quality Information’ section of this metadata report. Shoreline vectors derived from historic...

Originally created by Brad Shults, the GitHub repository was created for markdown code used to quality control survey data and create annual survey reports beginning in 2016. The repository can be found on GitHub (‘https://github.com/bsshults/Teshekpuk-Lake-Molt’). A copy of the master branch that was last committed by user “bsshults” (Brad Shults) on 2/24/20 was downloaded by Maggie Harings on 6/29/21 and stored on the Alaska Regional Data Repository (‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’). General file naming structure for repository files is: ‘TMGSurvey_Master_[surveyYear]’ Files ending in the file extension ‘.Rmd’ are used to conduct some quality control and data tidying for original survey data. These files contain comments...

This dataset provides the geographical locations of karst groundwater basins, groundwater flowpaths, and dye injection/recovery points in Kentucky. Dye tracing is a common method used for understanding groundwater flow pathways and connectivity. Dye is poured (or injected) into a sinking stream, well, sinkhole, or body of flowing water, where it is carried down-gradient. The locations at which dye is detected (or recovered) indicates a connection from injection to recovery site. This connection is a groundwater flowpath. As more dye traces are conducted, flowpath convergence or lack thereof can be used to draw karst groundwater basins, which are analogous to surficial watersheds. Karst groundwater basins differ...

Sediment samples collected for the National Geochemical Survey (NGS; 1999-2011) which was conceived, designed, and implemented by Andrew Grosz, retired USGS geologist. It was overseen and funded by the Mineral Resources Program. It was “a collaborative effort between government, industry, and academia to map the geochemical landscape of the US (the entire 50 States). The NGS was the first systematic study of its type and magnitude attempted by the USGS with a parallel effort to map North America collaboratively with Mexico and Canada. The survey’s scope provides data for over 60 analytes, and extend[s] to the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain Province and adjacent Continental Shelf, Alaska, Hawaii, and the...

Fragile barrier islands are important nesting habitat for focal species of the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative, such as brown pelicans, sea turtles, and black skimmers. Assessing the vulnerability of coastal ecosystems at a Gulf of Mexico-wide scale has become even more important in the wake of several destructive storms (e.g. Katrina, Rita, and Ike) and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

These data were created as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Services Center’s efforts to create an online mapping viewer depicting potential sea level rise and its associated impacts on the nation’s coastal areas. The purpose of the mapping viewer is to provide coastal managers and scientists with a preliminary look at sea level rise (slr) and coastal flooding impacts. The viewer is a screening-level tool that uses nationally consistent data sets and analyses. Data and maps provided can be used at several scales to help gauge trends and prioritize actions for different scenarios. The Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Impacts Viewer may be accessed at: http://www.csc.noaa.gov/slr.These...

In 1957, Henry (Hank) Hansen and Jim King identified important habitat for molting geese in an area now referred to as the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area (TLSA) in northern Alaska. Located within the larger National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-AK), the importance of this habitat was reaffirmed by the Secretary of Interior in 1977 with the designation of the TLSA. In 1976, the Waterfowl Department of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Management-Alaska (MBM-AK) began conducting aerial goose surveys within an area of the TLSA that they designated as the Traditional Survey Area. These surveys continued through 1978, after which there was a three-year hiatus. Surveys began again in 1982 and continued...

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment utilized expert opinion that was gathered through the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value (SIVVA) tool, which is an Excel-based vulnerability and prioritization tool that enables assessors to provide input in a relatively short time and allows for relatively seamless compilation of results. The vulnerability of each ecosystem and associated species was conducted by subregion, excluding those subregions where the species did not occur in significant numbers. Assessors were asked to evaluate species based on the habitats they use in a particular subregion. Because vulnerability can vary with life-stage for many species, assessors were asked to consider the most vulnerable...

This collection of reports are summaries of annual aerial surveys of molting geeze conducted near Teshekpuk Lake beginning in 2003. Annual reports completed for surveys conducted prior to 2003 are not in digital format. To access to these, please contact Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region Waterfowl Department (USFWS) directly. Because not all reports were completed within the same year as the corresponding aerial surveys, file naming format for each report was standardized to: [YYYY] _ [author] _ [(coauthor)] _ briefDescription. All markdown code used to produce reports starting in 2016 can be found here and is also located on the Alaska Regional Data Repository (GitHub_Annual_Report_Code folder).
