This data release comprises a set of environmental sucralose occurrence data in the Sacramento area. Groundwater samples were collected throughout the Sacramento Valley as part of the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project study in the Sacramento area. These water samples were analyzed for sucralose by chemical derivatization followed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The calculated concentrations of sucralose detected in the water samples and the associated quality assurance data are tabulated in this data release. This data release supports the following publications: [Voss et al, in prep]

Analysis of biological tissues or direct sources of food may better characterize exposure of non-target organisms to current-use pesticides. Food boluses were collected from tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) nestlings using a non-lethal, ligature method and were composited based on nest. The ligatures, which prevented the bolus from being swallowed, were placed on nestlings for 1 h until samples were collected. Samples in 2016 were collected from nestlings at 6 days and 12 days post-hatch whereas 2018 samples were collected from nestlings at 12 days post-hatch. Furthermore, in 2016 and 2018, insects commonly consumed by tree swallows were collected via sweep net and composited based on suborder (Brachycera, Nematocera,...

This dataset contains measurements of dissolved hydrocarbons in various water sources, as well as ancillary raw calibration data showing the stability of the gas chromatograph with an atomic emission detector and flame ionization detector (GC-AED-FID) analytical system over time. Across multiple studies, samples from tap water, groundwater, surface water, springs, mine outflows, and blank materials were analyzed using this system over a period from 2014 to 2017, comprising 172 samples analyzed. In addition to water samples, 183 calibrations conducted over the same period of time are included to document the stability of the GC-AED-FID system over time. The target analytes in this study were: methane (CH4), ethane...

A multiresidue method for solids (i.e., soil, sediment, sludge) was developed and evaluated for the analysis of pesticides and pesticide degradates. Initially, a well characterized soil was used to determine the recovery of target compounds using an Energized Dispersive Guided Extraction (EDGE) system with two extraction solvents, acetonitrile and 1:1 (v/v) hexane:acetone. Extracts were cleaned using solid-phase extraction (SPE) with graphitized carbon cartridges and three elution solvents, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, and 1:1 (v/v) dichlormethane:ethyl acetate. The individual SPE elutions from the two extraction solvents were analyzed separately via GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS for 210 pesticides and pesticide transformation...

Acetylene (C2H2) is a molecule rarely found in nature, with few known natural sources, but acetylenotrophic microorganisms can use acetylene as their primary carbon and energy source. As of 2018 there were 15 known strains of aerobic and anaerobic acetylenotrophs, however we hypothesized that there may be yet unrecognized diversity of acetylenotrophs in nature. In this study, we expanded this diversity by isolating an aerobic acetylenotroph, Bradyrhizobium sp. strain I71, from trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated soils undergoing bioremediation. TCE-contaminated soils from the NASA Ames Research Center in California were used to establish soil microcosms with acetylene as the primary carbon substrate and acetylene...

Oil and gas (OG) wastewaters are commonly disposed of by underground injection and previous research showed that activities at a disposal facility in West Virginia affected stream biogeochemistry and sediment microbial communities downstream from the facility. Microorganisms can control the fate and transport of organic and inorganic components of OG wastewater highlighting the need to characterize the effects of OG wastewater components on microbial activity. We conducted a series of aerobic microcosm experiments to assess the influence of high total dissolved solids (TDS) and hydraulic fracturing fluid additives (2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide (DBNPA), a biocide, and ethylene glycol, an anti-scaling additive),...
This data release includes biomarker ratio values calculated from measurements made at the USGS for the reference oil NSO-1 that were reported in a journal article entitled Comparability and reproducibility of biomarker ratio values measured by GC-QQQ-MS (French et al., 2020).

Time-series of sediment chemistry, including organic biomarker composition and bulk inorganic geochemical analytes, from samples collected over a one-year period in a sediment trap. The sediment traps were deployed at a depth between 603 m to 1318 m, and they were programmed to rotate a 250 mL sample bottle at 30 d intervals, delivering 12 samples during the 1-year deployment between August 2012 and June 2013. In addition, dissolved water column nutrient concentrations and water column trace element particulate concentrations were collected in Baltimore Canyon on the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB).

This dataset was produced from analyzing Affinisep SDB-RPS, Affinisep HLB, and Restek Resprep C18 disks that were deployed with the use of Chemcatcher® passive sampling devices. Silicone bands were also deployed and used for exploring economical methods of sampling for pesticides in surface water. Sampling assemblies were deployed in streams throughout the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range and California's northern Central Valley from 2017 to 2019. Samples were extracted in situ then eluted and concentrated at the Organic Chemistry Research Laboratory in Sacramento, CA. Samples from silicone bands were extracted via agitation in appropriate solvents. Samples were analyzed for a suite of 155 pesticides and degradates...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release is focused on the geochemistry of wells within the oil zone and groundwater monitoring wells away from the oiled zone at the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site, Bemidji MN (USA) from 1985-2015. The site located in Beltrami County is where a high-pressure pipeline carrying crude oil burst in 1979 and spilled approximately 1.7 million liters (10,700 barrels) of crude oil into glacial outwash deposits. Researchers and scientists from government agencies, academic institutions, the regulatory community, and private companies have conducted extensive investigations of groundwater geochemistry in hopes of understanding the evolution of plumes...

The Marcellus Shale Energy and Environmental Laboratory (MSEEL) field site in Morgantown, WV was established by West Virginia University in order to increase understanding of factors that affect resource recovery and environmental impacts from unconventional oil and gas development. The site, which is located in the Morgantown Industrial Park (MIP) adjacent to the Monongahela River, includes one well pad which hosts four horizontal gas wells that target the Marcellus Shale approximately 7400 ft below ground level. As part of the MSEEL study, the MIP 5H well was drilled in 2015. Water samples were collected from the holding pond used to hydraulically fracture the MIP 5H well (API 47-061-01699), and a time series...

Historical water and gas chemistry data from geothermal areas are important for detecting long-term patterns, informing geothermal energy exploration, development, and use, and for contextualizing more recent data. The U.S. Geological survey has published water and gas chemistry data from geothermal areas in the western United States, which is primarily available as scanned PDF files. This makes the data difficult to access or include in large-scale data analysis. This data release provides digitized and reformatted data from 20 previously published U.S. Geological Survey Open-File reports and journal articles, representing 1867 water chemistry samples and 313 gas chemistry samples. All data have been standardized...

To evaluate the potential uptake and accumulation of pesticides in amphibians, American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) tadpoles were collected from surface water sites (four ponds and one reservoir) in 2021 near Mead, Nebraska. Sites were located in the landscape surrounding the AltEn ethanol plant, a plant which had previously received pesticide treated (coated) seeds. Tadpoles were collected in November 2021, these tadpoles hatched in June 2021. The tadpole tissues were dried, homogenized, and then extracted using acetonitrile at 100 °C. Samples were analyzed for 166 pesticides and degradates using both gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 14 pesticides and degradates were detected...
