The Geminus quadrangle, centrally located in the northeast quadrant of the lunar near side, is dominated geologically by several multi-ringed circular basins outside the quadrangle and five relatively young, large craters mapped here. The terra and the older craters apparently are mantled by a nearly continuous blanket of ejecta from the Serenitatis, Crisium, Humboldtianum, and Imbrium basins, which lie, respectively, southwest, southeast, and west of the quadrangle. Escarpments and rings of blocks concentric with these basins were raised by faulting and tilting when the basins were formed, presumably by hyper-velocity impacts of asteroid-sized bodies. The light and dark plains in Lacus Somniorum and in the north...
The surface of the moon is heterogeneous. Surface materials are classed on the basis of telescopic observations into units each having a limited range of physical properties such as topography, visible under low-illumination and albedo, the reflectivity under full-Moon illumination. Such units are considered analogous to the rock-stratigraphic formations of terrestrial geology. By application of the principles of superposition and intersection, these rock units are arranged in order of relative age and grouped into time stratigraphic units. Following terrestrial contention, the major time-stratigraphic units are designated systems, and their subdivisions, series; corresponding to these units are periods and epochs...
The Hommel quadrangle is in the southeast highlands of the earthside hemisphere of the Moon. The major geologic units are smooth and ridged terra materials, plains-forming materials and crater materials Mare material is absent. In the absence of extensive stratigraphic datum horizons, the geologic units were tentatively correlated with the type areas of the lunar geologic systems (Shoemaker and Hackman, 1962; Wilhelms, 1970) by means of a graded sequence of crater morphologies.
Material exposed on the surface of the moon is heterogeneous. The albedo and other physical characteristics that have been determined with the use of optical and radio telescopes vary from one part of the moon to another, and the variations are partially correlated with differences in topography . Discontinuities in the areal variation permit the surfaces material to be divided into map units, each exhibiting a limited range of topographic characteristics. Each map unit is further characterized by a distinctive pattern of distribution, and the patterns of certain units are in places superimposed on the patterns of other units. From the relations of superposition it is possible to determine the sequence in which...

This coverage includes arcs, polygons and polygon labels that describe U.S. Geological Survey defined geologic provinces of the Australia and New Zealand area (Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga and Vanuatu; and parts of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands). Each province has a set of geologic characteristics distinguishing it from surrounding provinces. These characteristics may include the dominant lithologies, the age of the strata, and the structural style. Some provinces include multiple genetically-related basins. Offshore province boundaries are defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour.

The digitally compiled map includes geology, oil and gas field centerpoints, and geologic provinces of the Arctic (North Pole area encircled by 640 N Latitude). The GIS data sets were designed originally in ESRI's ARC/INFO ver. 8.0.1 and were published as part of a series of interim CD-ROM products of the U.S. Geological Survey's World Energy Project (WEP). The goal of the WEP is to assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world. Results of this assessment were reported in the year 2000 (see USGS DDS-60; http://pubs.usgs.gov/dds/dds-060/).

The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated national archive of geoscience maps, reports, and stratigraphic information. The Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 and its Reauthorizations calls for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) to cooperatively build this national archive, according to technical and scientific standards whose development is coordinated by the NGMDB. The NGMDB consists of a comprehensive set of publication citations, stratigraphic nomenclature, downloadable content in raster and vector formats, unpublished source information, and guidance on standards development. The NGMDB contains information on more than 110,000 maps and...

Geologic studies of the upper Chena River area were undertaken in 1983 as part of the Interior Mining District Evaluation Program, a series of projects designed to develop new information on known mineral districts in interior Alaska. During the three-year course of the program, geologists examined four districts that have contributed significantly to historical gold production in Alaska's Interior, Fairbanks, Livengood, Richardson, and upper Chena River.
Kasatochi is a small, isolated island volcano in the center of the Aleutian Island chain. It consists of a roughly circular cone approximately 3 km in diameter with a lake-filled central crater that is 1.2 km in diameter and extends from the highest point on the island to sea level. The oldest unit recognized is a thick series of mid-Pleistocene glaciovolcanic deposits consisting of autobrecciated lava, lahars, and volumetrically minor lava masses that we believe to have been emplaced underneath a regional ice cap. This unit is unconformably overlain by several massive Holocene lavas, above which lies a thick sequence of latest-Holocene pyroclastic deposits likely deposited during the crater-forming eruption. The...

This surficial-geologic map shows the distribution of unconsolidated deposits and undifferentiated bedrock in the Faith Creek area in the Circle A-4, A-5, B-4, and B-5 quadrangles. This map was prepared principally by the interpretation of 1:63,360-scale, false-color, infrared aerial photographs taken in 1979 and 1981 and is locally verified by ground observations during field work in 2007.

This data file presents 40Ar/39Ar step-heating geochronology results for a granite sample from the Livengood mining district. The Livengood area is a historically productive placer mining area approximately 80 road miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska. This data is a component of a geologic map and accompanying report that synthesizes recently collected and previously published agency and industry geologic data in a 1:50,000-scale comprehensive geologic map to build a better understanding of the geology and mineral-resource potential of the Livengood area.

This collection is comprised of legacy DGGS geologic maps that have been converted to the single-map USGS Geologic Map Schema (GeMS; formerly known as NCGMP09). Initial conversions will be conducted on maps in areas with critical mineral potential, benefiting DGGS and USGS critical mineral studies in Alaska. Future additions to this collection will include both converted geologic maps, and new geologic maps created using the GeMS schema.
The study area is situated along the southern edge of the Superstition Mountains approximately 40 miles east of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (Figure 1). Geology is dominated by mid-Tertiary volcanic rocks of the Superior volcanic field (Ransome, 1903), and these rocks depostionally overlie a crystalline basement of early Proterozoic Pinal Schist intruded by middle Proterozoic granitoids. In some areas a relatively thin sequence of the Middle Proterozoic Apache Group occurs along the contact between these two rock types. The volcanic stratigraphy of the southern Superstition Mountains changes abruptly from a sequence dominated by lavas on the south, in the Whitlow Canyon Area, to a sequence dominated by...
The Goldfield Quadrangle and Superstition Mountains are located about 40 km due east ofPhoenix, Arizona, and a few miles east of Apache Junction, and include part of the Superstition Wilderness Area (Figure 1). Aerially extensive exposures of welded tuff form steep, rugged cliffs in the Superstition Mountains and overlie tilted felsic and mafic volcanic rocks, pre-volcanic conglomerate, and Precambrian granite and Pinal Schist. This study was carried out concurrently with mapping in the Florence Junction Quadrangle and the southern part of the Weaver's Needle Quadrangle. Mapping in the Goldfield Quadrangle continued from January through April, 1995.
The geology of the Mormon Flat Dam Quadrangle is dominated by a thick succession of Miocene volcanic rocks, and by the consequences of two important structural events: 1)formation of the Superstition Cauldron at approximately 18.6 M a (McIntosh, personalcommunication, Ferguson and others, in preparation), and 2) regional extension which wasactive for a short period of time directly before, during, and after eruption of the Apache LeapTuff. The Tertiary stratigraphy consists of three broadly defined sequences: 1) pre-cauldronlavas, 2) syn-cauldron units - chiefly Apache Leap Tuff, and 3) post-cauldron lavas, intrusionsand volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks.Regional extensional tectonism was active over a broad area...
