The polygon (vector) shapefiles represent claim areas within Public Land Survey System (PLSS) sections aggregated by serial (claim) numbers with information about Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land and mineral use authorizations geothermal. The land areas specified by BLM authorizations vary in size and orientation, and may cross one or more PLSS section boundaries. For spatial consistency, the information was aggregated to the square mile PLSS section boundary and by serial numbers. The original source data from BLM Cases Recordation database (LR2000) were specific to the day they were generated (March 6, 2016) and subsequent data pulls will likely be different.

Topography provides information about the structural controls of the Great Basin and therefore information that may be used to identify favorable structural settings for geothermal systems. Specifically, local relative topography gives information about locations of faults and fault intersections relative to mountains, valleys, or at the transitions between. As part of U.S. Geological Survey efforts to engineer features that are useful for predicting geothermal resources, we construct a detrended elevation map that emphasizes local relative topography and highlights features that geologists use for identifying geothermal systems (i.e., providing machine learning algorithms with features that may improve predictive...

This layer contains the locations of identified moderate (90 - 150° C) and high (> 150° C) temperature geothermal systems and associated reservoir volumes, temperatures, and estimated electric power generation potential. These results were used in characterizing the geothermal resource potential in the United States.

This is a surface showing relative favorability for the presence of geothermal systems in the western United States. It is an average of 12 models that correlates different geological and geophysical factors to the known presence of moderate (90 - 150° C) to high (> 150° C) temperature geothermal systems. as discussed in the reference in the 'Larger Work' section of this metadata file. The data is represented as a polygon contour file as well as a raster.

This dataset consists of 24 magnetotelluric (MT) stations collected in 2017 in Gabbs Valley, Nevada. The U.S. Geological Survey acquired these data as part of Phase 2 of the Nevada Play Fairway Analysis Project led by the University of Nevada at Reno and funded by the Department of Energy (grant number DE-EE0006731) with support from the U.S. Geological Survey's Energy Program.

This dataset consists of 42 magnetotelluric (MT) stations collected in 2017 in the Northwest Geysers, CA and 534 gravity stations collected in 2017 and 2019. The U.S. Geological Survey acquired these data as part of a project to image the heat source in the Northwest Geysers. Support was from the U.S. Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program.
