This data set is comprised of a potential distribution model for the Grassland Bird Assemblage within the Northwestern Plains Ecoregion. Observations used in maxent were from 1990 - present and during the months of May - September (birds only). The assemblage includes Baird's sparrow, chestnut-collared longspur, McCown's longspur, Sprague's Pipit and one non bird species, swift fox. Observations for swiftfox related to road kill were removed from the observations. The moderate and optimal maxent model threshold for WYNDD was extracted for each species in the assemblage and overlaid to show where multiple species values overlap. 1 = one species, 5 = all 5 species optimal habitat overlapping.

It was reclassified to combine the maxent output for the low, moderate and optimal thresholds into one class (1).

The assemblage includes Baird's sparrow, chestnut-collared longspur, McCown's longspur, Sprague's Pipit and one non bird species, swift fox. Observations for swiftfox related to road kill were removed from the observations.A moving window analysis was done to calculate if maxent other maxent modeled output was within 1km. The average was then calculated for the HUC 12 watershed.

The assemblage includes Baird's sparrow, chestnut-collared longspur, McCown's longspur, Sprague's Pipit and one non bird species, swift fox. Observations for swiftfox related to road kill were removed from the observations. This layer was processed to reclass open water and cultivated lands from the maxent output. It was reclassified to separate the maxent output for the low (1), moderate (2) and optimal (3) thresholds

This cropland data layer was downloaded from the USDA website and reclassed to put all cultivated crops into one class (10). It was then used to erase any maxent output that fell into recently culitvated lands.

The assemblage includes Baird's sparrow, chestnut-collared longspur, McCown's longspur, Sprague's Pipit and one non bird species, swift fox. Observations for swiftfox related to road kill were removed from the observations. The three values (FRI, Distance to Anthro, and Connectivity) were combined using a weighted sum overlay to determine the overall score for the HUC 12 watershed. The weighting was 0.1 for FRI, and 0.45 for both Distance to anthro and Connectivity.

Grassland habitats are well adapted to periodic wildland fire. Periodic wildland fires maintain high grass vigor, reduce the buildup of thatch, and prevent the encroachment of woody species. Frequency of wildland fire is a major factor influencing the quality of habitat for grassland bird species. Baird’s sparrow reaches peak densities within 2-4 years after a fire, followed by a decline in density. Sprague’s pipits are most abundant in the first 2-3 years post-fire and, in portions of their range, may be absent from native prairie that has not been burned or grazed in more than 8 years. In drier portions of their range, Sprague’s pipits may exhibit high abundance in undisturbed native prairie for longer periods....

This development layer was used as part of the Distance to Anthropogenic sources Key Ecological Attribute for the Grassland Birds Assemblage. Its was created by buffering point and line features (roads, oil wells, etc) and merging with raster data such as developed and agricultural lands taken from GAP data sources.
