Recovery of the endangered pallid sturgeon is comprised of interrelated programs (including, Conservation Propagation and Stocking Program (CPSP), and Pallid Sturgeon Population Assessment Program (PSPAP) with numerous contributing agencies. These programs are in need of improved database architecture to integrate and share the capture, tagging, propagation, stocking, genetics, and other critical data to meet program and population monitoring requirements and to measure progress toward recovery. A range-wide relational database architecture or decision support system is needed to manage and integrate the large amounts of data collected by numerous partners and programs in order to evaluate progress toward downlisting...

Grassland birds have declined more rapidly than any other group of land birds in North America in the last 50 years with populations of Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, and Bairds Sparrow having declined 65-94% during this period. This cross-programmatic collaborative project will expand on a growing network of Motus automated receivers (stations) to provide the first fine-scale quantitative assessment of the migratory period for regional priority grassland songbirds which will inform key knowledge gaps about migration routes and stopover locations. Data collected via Motus automated telemetry tracking will allow the FWS and partners to inform full-life cycle models to reveal limiting...

Populations of lesser prairie-chickens are proposed for listing as threatened or endangered. Lesserprairie-chickens require relatively intact, large grassland dominated habitats for population persistence. Successful conservation efforts require knowledge of potential landscape thresholds and grassland patch configuration affecting lesser prairie-chicken populations. We will use existing population survey, lek location, and data from >700 previously marked lesser prairie-chickens to determine the potential for the presences of large-scale landcover thresholds that influence occupancy and persistence of lesser prairie-chickens as well as testing effects of gradients of grassland composition and configuration within...

The desert grasslands of the southwestern United States support many wildlife species of management concern and economic value. The American pronghorn, for example, is a game species that contributes to local and state economies. Climate extremes, including severe droughts, heat waves, and atmospheric river events, are expected to occur more frequently in the Southwest. These extremes can affect the availability of food and water needed by wildlife. Wildlife management agencies and conservation organizations need information on resource availability for wildlife under future climate scenarios to design effective management strategies to sustain wildlife populations. Project scientists are working with the Arizona...

Tortula ruralis is a homoiochlorophyllous-desiccation-tolerant (HDT) moss that retains all pigments when dehydrated and rapidly recovers physiological function upon rehydration. This moss forms extensive cover in exposed and shaded areas in the sandy semi-arid grasslands of Central Europe. We hypothesized that contrasting drying regimes between these microhabitats would affect-plant N status, constraints to gas exchange and growth, as well as result in altered pigment concentrations and ratios, and photochemical light-response dynamics. Furthermore, we believed T. ruralis's HDT habit would limit its ability to acclimate to altered light environment. We found that sun plant T. ruralis had lower plant mass, as well...

This data record contains arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) operational taxonomic unit (OTU) occurrences in native prairie plant roots collected from remnant prairies and reconstruction of tallgrass prairies in Minnesota and Iowa, from April-December of 2022. The research aims to improve prairie reconstruction methods using AMF to improve prairie plant performance, species diversity, and resistance to invasive cool-season grasses. The data in this release includes 5 data sets. Three describe the AMF: 1) SampleID_and_OTU_readcount_tier2_data.csv provides the number of reads for each OTU identified in each sample; 2) OTU_assigned_taxonomy_FunGuild.csv includes a collated list of all the taxonomic guilds of the identified...

This collaborative project will result in the first fine-scale quantitative assessment of the migratory period for regional priority grassland songbirds (Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and McCowns Longspurs, Bairds and Grasshopper Sparrows, and Lark Bunting). Data collected via automated telemetry tracking will inform full-life cycle models to reveal limiting factors and identify critical habitat for these species throughout the annual cycle, particularly migration.

We developed multi-scale habitat suitability models for black-tailed prairie dogs (BTPD) in the southwestern Great Plains, corresponding to the western region of the Great Plains LCC. We used long-term (10-yr), high-resolution datasets on BTPD colony boundary locations collected at 7 study areas distributed across the region to develop resource selection functions based on colony locations and expansion patterns. Models are based on (1) soil maps and associated Ecological Sites (NRCS SSURGO database), (2) a topographic wetness index based upon water runoff and solar insolation patterns (TWIsi) that tests a priori hypotheses for topographic controls on BTPD, and (3) broad climatic gradients in temperature and mean...

GRASSLANDS,
While we assessed the vulnerability of a number of different wildlife and plant species to climate change, none of those species exhibited high vulnerability to changes projected for the region and there was limited differentiation in vulnerability between the individual species. Given this shared level of vulnerability to climate change, we chose to focus our adaptation planning on grassland birds as they represent a large group with a diversity of habitat needs. These birds are obligate grassland wildlife species which have great potential to act as indicators for habitat quality since different species have distinct habitat structure needs. Participants in the adaptation planning workshop agreed that if the GP...

Pollinator surveys are currently being conducted in North Dakota, but we are lacking data in other areas. Given likely petitions on the horizon, having baseline data for pollinators will be essential for an informed response. Additionally, these data will be important for habitat prioritization. Given the complexity and difficulty for comprehensive identification of all key pollinators and the urgency of threatened petitions, initial projects should likely focus on bees and butterflies. Results of these surveys will also help guide where and how to sample several at risk species in different habitat types across several states. Ultimately this information could inform a national pollinator survey database development.PI:...
