Trends in nutrient fluxes and streamflow for selected tributaries in the Lake Erie watershed were calculated using monitoring data at 10 locations. Trends in flow-normalized nutrient fluxes were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). Site information and streamflow and water-quality records are contained in 3 zipped files named as follows: INFO (site information), Daily (daily streamflow records), and Sample (water-quality records). Habitat suitability was estimated for invasive Phragmites in the coastal Great Lakes region (shoreline to 10 km inland). These estimates were based on current distribution patterns and environmental conditions. Phragmites presence or absence was defined based on a distribution map produced by cooperative research between the GLSC and Michigan Technical Research Institute. Environmental variables were processed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) and came from existing publicly available sources. Chemical composition of fish bones can be used to trace fish migrations and other movements (e.g., use of tributaries for spawning). Chemical composition of water is required to be able to trace fish migrations or movements to particular rivers or streams. Because water chemistry can change over time due to changes in land use, tectonic movements that alter groundwater pathways, pollution, industrial activity, and potentially other sources, periodic re-assessment of water chemistry is required. Species occurrence data were obtained from the Atlas of Spawning and Nursery Areas of Great Lakes Fishes (Goodyear et al. 1982). The atlas contains information on all of the commercially and recreationally important species that use the tributaries, littoral and open-water areas of the Great Lakes as spawning and nursery habitats. Close to 9500 geo-referenced data records (occurrences of fish species) were imported into ArcView GIS. The 139 fish taxa reported in the Atlas had to be grouped into fewer broad categories to produce meaningful distribution maps. We chose three functional classification schemes. The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset contains data collected on contaminants in sediments, benthic invertebrate populations, fish populations and abnormalities, and fish health of primarily brown bullhead in Areas of Concerns (AOCs) on Lake Erie. A subset of the larger dataset, this section specifically handles reference tables, used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient, for the main tables of the LEEI dataset. The reference tables include: site.csv, site_date.csv, and species.csv.
Data were collected as part of a study to identify sources of E. coli contamination at several beaches located in the Grand Calumet River Areas of Concern, located in northern Indiana on Lake Michigan. The study was funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Water samples were collected at each site (Jeorse Park 1, Jeorse Park 2, Hammond East, Hammond West, Whihala West, Whihala East, Whihala west breakwater, Hammond Marina, Whihala offshore locations, and the Grand Calumet River) one day a week or three times a week between 2015 and 2018. This dataset describes the identification of phytoplankton to the lowest taxonomic level (typically species), as well as abundance (density) and biovolume from grab samples collected from Lake Michigan at Jackson Park at Hyde Park, Illinois and Lake Michigan at Jeorse Park at Gary, Indiana.
Diet analyses were performed on juvenile lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) captured by bottom trawl during annual USGS Great Lakes Science Center demersal fish community surveys in mid-October to mid-November 2008–2017 in Lake Huron. This dataset contains lake trout capture information (e.g., location, depth) and diet item data (taxa consumed and their associated lengths).
Image and biometric data were collected for 22 species of fish from Great Lakes Tributaries in Michigan and Ohio, and the Illinois River for the purpose of developing a fish identification classifier. Data consists of a comma delimited spreadsheet that identifies image file names and associated fish identification number, common name, species code, family name, genus, and species, date collected, river from which each fish was collected, location of sampling, fish fork length in millimeters, girth in millimeters, weight in kilograms, and personnel involved with image collection. Biometric data are saved as .csv comma delimited format and image files are saved as .png file type.
