This Country Documentation Report presents the development and updating of economic indices for Guatemala for the period from 1970 through 1983. It supplements the Phase I Country Documentation Report for Guatemala which presents the development of economic indices for the period 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. Album caption: W.A. Love with radio equipment set up at Ixlu to receive time signals. This set was designed as standard equipment for a U.S. Navy destroyer to receive time signals on wave lengths of 600 to 25000 meters. It weighed about 300 pounds. Signals were received from Nauen, Germany; Arlington, Virginia; Balboa, Canal Zone; and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. A concert in progress in Birmingham, Alabama was also received. Guatemala. 1923. Instrument was about 30 kilometers south of the Motagua fault surface breakage. Arrow (about left center) indicates north. The plate was scratched all over. Recording of main event is shown in the middle part of the plate and to the sides before dislodging. Department of Guatemala. Guatemala, 1976. Album caption: Graphs showing measured horizontal displacement (below) and vertical displacement (above) along the 230 km length of the observed surface rupture of the Motagua fault. Displacement across the fault is sinistral (left-lateral) and is almost entirely horizontal with the strike-slip component ranging up to 340 cm and averaging about 110 cm. Vertical displacements are variable and less than 30 percent of the horizontal displacements. Note the large lateral variations in both horizontal and vertical slip. Guatemala Earthquake 1976.
