We examined habitat use and foraging activity of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus), as well as nocturnal aerial insect abundance at Kaloko-Honōkohau National Historical Park located in the coastal region of Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i Island. The study area covers approximately 486 ha of marine waters and terrestrial coastal plains. Hawaiian hoary bat echolocation vocalizations were recorded at seven acoustic stations (KAHO1-KAHO7) between 1 and 10 m above sea level, that operated nightly from November 2013 through February 2015. Nocturnal aerial insect collection occurred in January and April (2 or 3 nights each) and in July and November (1 or 2 nights each) in 2014. Insects were collected...

While there have been many maps produced that depict vegetation for the state of Hawai‘i only a few of these display land cover for all of the main Hawaiian Islands, and most of those that were created before the year 2000 have very generalized units or are somewhat inaccurate as a result of more recent land use changes or due to poor resolution (both spatial and spectral) in the imagery that was used to produce the map. Some of the more detailed and accurate maps include the Hawai‘i GAP Analysis (HI-GAP) Land Cover map (Gon et al. 2006), the NOAA C-CAP Land Cover map (NOAA National Ocean Service Coastal Services Center 2012), and the more recently released Hawai‘i LANDFIRE EVT Land Cover map (U.S. Geological Survey...

This feature class contains vegetation polygons for the upland areas on the island of Hawaii (Big Island). This map was orignally plotted on 1:24000-scale map sheets, using aerial photos taken in the years 1976-1977. Thus this map represents a snapshot of the vegetation at this time. The original mapping project was part of the the Hawaii Forest Bird Survey, and consequently only bird habitat areas of interest (495,454 ha or 47% of the island) were mapped. This dataset has the most detailed level of mapping, including information on canopy cover, canopy height, dominant tree species composition, species association type, dominant understory composition, and other information pertaining to the map unit.

This data release includes data and metadata on “(1) outplant survival, (2) post-disturbance percent cover, (3) post-disturbance shrub counts, (4) point-intercept vegetation data, (5) random plot coordinates, (6) soil chemistry and ratios, and (7) soil moisture. All sites were within Keamuku Maneuver Area on Hawaii Island. This study looked at how microtopography and biotic interactions influence post-disturbance recovery and native planting success in native shrub-dominated and non-native, invasive grass-dominated dryland habitats.
This data release includes data and metadata on post-disturbance percent cover of recovering vegetation after disturbance for sites within Keamuku Maneuver Area on Hawaii Island. This study looked at how microtopography and biotic interactions influence post-disturbance recovery in native shrub-dominated and non-native, invasive grass-dominated dryland habitats.
This data release includes data and metadata on pre and post disturbance percent cover of species, measured using the point-intercept method, in different dominant vegetation types and habitat suitabilities within Keamuku Maneuver Area (KMA) on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at how microtopography and biotic interactions influence post-disturbance recovery and native planting success in native shrub-dominated and non-native, invasive grass-dominated dryland habitats.

The Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus), a federally and state listed endangered subspecies, is the only extant native terrestrial mammal in the Hawaiian archipelago. It is an insectivorous, solitary and foliage-roosting species that generally roosts alone or in mother-pup family groups. A total of 58 bats (17 female; 41 male; 56 adult; 2 juvenile) were captured at multiple locations on the east side of Hawaii Island from May 2018 through September 2019. Radio transmitters were affixed to 56 bats including two individuals that were recaptured and radio-tagged twice. When possible, radio telemetry was used to locate bats in trees and forest stands used for day-roosting. A total of 23 trees were identified...

Hawaiian hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus semotus) were captured at multiple locations on the east side of Hawaii Island from May 2018 through September 2019. Radio transmitters were affixed to captured bats and, when possible, radio telemetry was used to locate bats in trees used for day-roosts. Repeated visits to confirm bat presence were conducted until radio-tagged bats were no longer detected at roosts. A total of 56 bats (40 male; 16 female; 55 adult; 1 juvenile) were captured and radio-tagged, and of these, 33 were tracked to roost (23 male; 10 female; 32 adult; 1 juvenile) of either stand- or tree-level. For this subset of 33 bats, the number of distinct days with confirmed occupancy of a bat at roost at either...

Detection trials for roosting bats were conducted from June to October 2019. Bats confirmed as present at roosts were used as “targets” to evaluate the efficacy of detecting bats with thermal imaging, and when not effective (i.e., during hotter parts of the day when the technique could not discern bats from warm vegetation), visual searching with binoculars was also investigated. Most bat detection trials (48 of 95; 51%) were...
