This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of plants 2) species specific plant traits 3) sampling locations and 4) environmental data. All sites were within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. Plant cover data were obtained from National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. Plant trait data was collected for these plots in 2014. This study aims to evaluate how traits of native and exotic plant species change along environmental gradients and what this suggests for plant competition and invasion.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. February 1969 eruption of Kilauea Volcano. Opening of a fissure across Chain of Craters Road west of Alae Crater: 2:08 p.m., February 22, 1969, lava fountains from the fissure extend into the forest on the right side of the road, setting fires and forming tree molds. The lava flow advances along the highway causing the asphalt to melt and, in places, burn. The asphalt pavement is buried by a thin flow and can commonly be located and mapped by observing the black discoloration of the flow due to tarry substances distilled from the asphalt. Photo by J.C. An intrusion into Kīlauea’s upper East Rift Zone during June 17–19, 2007, during the 1983–2018 Pu‘u‘ō‘ō eruption, led to widespread ground cracking and a small (~1,525 m3) eruption on the northeast flank of the Kānenuiohamo cone, about 6 km upslope from the Pu‘u‘ō‘ō vent. Transmitted and induced very-low-frequency (VLF) magnetic fields were measured with a handheld VLF receiver along transects spanning the dike trace, and zones of ground cracking related to the intrusion were mapped. This dataset records the density and vesicularity of selected lava and tephra samples collected from the June 2007 Father's Day eruption site.
