This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of plants 2) species specific plant traits 3) sampling locations and 4) environmental data. All sites were within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. Plant cover data were obtained from National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. Plant trait data was collected for these plots in 2014. This study aims to evaluate how traits of native and exotic plant species change along environmental gradients and what this suggests for plant competition and invasion.

Opening of a fissure across Chain of Craters Road west of Alae Crater: 2:08 p.m., February 22, 1969, lava fountains from the fissure extend into the forest on the right side of the road, setting fires and forming tree molds. The lava flow advances along the highway causing the asphalt to melt and, in places, burn. An intrusion into Kīlauea’s upper East Rift Zone during June 17–19, 2007, during the 1983–2018 Pu‘u‘ō‘ō eruption, led to widespread ground cracking and a small (~1,525 m3) eruption on the northeast flank of the Kānenuiohamo cone, about 6 km upslope from the Pu‘u‘ō‘ō vent. Transmitted and induced very-low-frequency (VLF) magnetic fields were measured with a handheld VLF receiver along transects spanning the dike trace, and zones of ground cracking related to the intrusion were mapped. This data includes plot location, elevation, canopy density, canopy species, and char height for each plot that was surveyed for this study. All plots were located in the burn scar of the 2018 Keauhou Fire in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, in the area known as the "Mauna Loa strip", located on the south flank of Mauna Loa.

In Hawai‘i and other oceanic islands with few native land mammals, black rats (Rattus rattus) are among the most damaging invasive vertebrate species to native forest bird populations and habitats, due to their arboreal behavior and generalist foraging habitats and habitat use. We evaluated the nesting response of Hawai‘i ‘Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis; Monarchidae), a generalist insectivore, to the removal of black rats using rodenticide in a before-after-control-impact study in high and low, mesic montane habitat recovering from long-term damage from introduced ungulates and weeds. A total of 100 samples were collected from two proximal sections of Keanakākoʻi, Tephra unit D deposits. Samples were analyzed on Microtrac CAMSIZER® P4 and X2 instruments for grain size and shape data in the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) tephra lab. Data release includes sample descriptions, half phi grain size distributions, and statistical output from DECOLOG deconvolution modeling of grain size distributions. Grain size is reported using the sieve compatible Xcmin parameter (CAMSIZER® manual, 2020). Data of 2D shape parameter means of sphericity, Krumbein roundness and compactness of samples as well as for half phi grain size bins at 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, and -1 phi are also included.
