1. Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the relative influence of water quality and substratum quality on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Animas River, a metal-polluted stream in south-western Colorado (U.S.A.). 2. A community-level in situ toxicity test measured direct effects of Animas River water on benthic invertebrates collected from a reference stream (Elk Creek). This report and digital data release presents 82 new rock geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples. These samples were originally collected by the USBM as part of their critical and strategic minerals project, which investigated tin occurrences associated with the Ohio Creek pluton, south-central Alaska. Historic USBM sample materials were retrieved by DGGS from the DGGS Geologic Materials Center (GMC), where the USBM samples were transferred as part of the federally funded Minerals Data and Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Re-analyses of sample pulps and bulk rejects from historic USBM rock and heavy-mineral-concentrate samples were conducted by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) as part of the State of Alaska's Strategic and Critical Minerals Assessment project, which is designed to evaluate Alaska's potential for these resources. The objective of this resource assessment is to expand the state's geochemical database by obtaining and publishing modern, quantitative geochemical analyses for historic USBM samples, where available. Highlights of this re-analysis project include heavy mineral concentrates with up 7,220 ppm Sn, 5,870 ppm Cr, and 17,000 ppm Mn.

This data release includes physical and chemical characteristics of field collected samples from streams and rivers within the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD) as well as toxicity endpoints from chronic water-only and sediment laboratory exposures including survival and growth of the mussel Lampsilis siliquoidea; survival, growth, and reproduction of the amphipod Hyalella azteca; metal concentrations, and various water quality parameters collected during the toxicity studies. Mining in the Tri-State Mining District took place over a large geographic area, with mining taking place in the three states of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
A value of simultaneously extracted metal to acid-volatile sulfide (SEM–AVS) can provide important information regarding metal availability in anaerobic sediment. SEM and AVS concentrations were obtained by the cold-acid purge-and-trap technique during spring and summer at six locations along the Mississippi River floodplain. SEM–AVS values and AVS concentrations did not vary significantly between locations during both seasons. AVS concentrations were significantly greater during summer than spring, resulting in significantly lower SEM–AVS values in summer. Charcoal is well known to accumulate contaminants, but its association with metals and other toxic elements in natural settings has not been well studied. Association of contaminants with charcoal in soil and sediment may affect their mobility, bioavailability, and fate in the environment. In this paper, natural wildfire charcoal samples collected from a wetland site that has been heavily contaminated by mine waste were analyzed for elemental contents and compared to the surrounding soil. Brown trout, Salmo trutta, exposed to heavy metals (mainly Cd and Zn) for at least 2 years in the Eagle River, Colorado, were examined for liver size and activity of the growth-promoting enzyme, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and compared to trout living in an uncontaminated site. Liver-somatic index (LSI) was greater for trout living in the uncontaminated site with the LSI of females being significantly greater than that of males. The LSI for females at the uncontaminated site was greater than that of females at the contaminated site, but males were not different statistically. Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a heterogeneous material. Though regulated as un-speciated mass, it exerts most effects on vegetation and ecosystems by virtue of the mass loading of its chemical constituents. As this varies temporally and spatially, prediction of regional impacts remains difficult. Deposition of PM to vegetated surfaces depends on the size distribution of the particles and, to a lesser extent, on the chemistry. Streambed sediment samples were collected in October 2016 from streams tributary to Wisconsin’s western Lake Michigan shoreline. Streams included two Areas of Concern (AOCs), two non-AOC comparisons, and two additional non-AOC study areas. Within the Milwaukee Estuary AOC, samples were collected from the Milwaukee River (three subsites), the Menomonee River (two subsites), the Kinnickinnic River (2 subsites), and the Milwaukee Harbor (one subsite). This study describes the toxic effects of different prominent aquatic pollutants?heavy metals (Cd & Pb), pesticides (alphamethrin and deltamethrin) and salt (NaCl)?on the intracellular proline content in the cyanobacterium, Westiellopsis prolifica?Janet strain?NCCU331.
