Album caption and index card: Hebgen Lake earthquake. This photograph, taken on the morning of August 18, shows an overtuned Cadillac along the Red Canyon fault scarp where it crosses U.S. Highway 191 near the Duck Creek Motel. The owner of this Cadillac and his family had spend the night at the Duck Creek Motel, and were awakened by the earthquake. The man panicked and rushed his family into the Cadillac. He decided to go to West Yellowstone and began driving south. He drove approximately 500 feet greatly increasing his speed unaware of the fault scrap. The car plummeted off the fault scrap, landed on its side, and overturned. The family, bruised and shaken, crawled out of the car; no one seriously injured. They...

Album caption and index card: Row of sand spouts with two principal craters on emergent floor of Hebgen Lake. The row of sand spouts is on trace fault with downdropped block to the right. The fault displacement of about two feet is masked by the movement of saturated silt with the recession of the lake water. The craters were formed after the shore emerged and thus were not destroyed by lake waves. Tobacco can gives scale. Lake Hebgen earthquake. Gallatin County, Montana. 1959.
