Photogrammetric digital surface models and orthoimagery for 26 coastal communities of western Alaska
The State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys acquired photogrammetric digital surface models (DSMs) and co-registered orthorectified aerial images (orthoimages) for the west coast of Alaska in support of coastal vulnerability mapping efforts. This report is a summary of the data collected over 26 developed areas along approximately 3,500 km of coastline in the Bering Sea, Norton Sound, and Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta regions (fig. 1). Aerial photographs were collected between July 31 and September 6, 2015, and processed using Structure from- Motion (SfM) photogrammetry techniques. Ground control points (GCPs) and checkpoints were collected in support of these data products during a Global Navigation...

Nearshore bathymetry is a vital link that joins offshore water depths to coastal topography. Seamless water depth information is a critical input parameter for reliable storm surge models, enables the calculation of sediment budgets, and is necessary baseline data for a range of coastal development decisions. Bathymetric data collection capabilities of an active coastal geohazard field program operated by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) were expanded in 2012. Resultant datasets presented in this report include nearshore bathymetric measurements of critical shallow-water coastal areas in the vicinity of six western Alaska communities: Gambell, Golovin, Hooper Bay, Savoonga, Shishmaref,...

A trichotomous choice survey was used to document local expert observations of five berry species locally known as: salmonberry (Rubus chamaemorus), blackberry (Empetrum nigrum), cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), and red berry (Rubus arcticus). The survey consisted of propositions concerning importance of specific berry species within Indigenous households; observations of changes in berry abundance, phenology, habitat, or availability; attribution of potential drivers of change; and instance of changes in behavior in response to changing berry resources. Respondents were asked to agree (yes) or disagree (no) with propositions or state that they were unsure of an answer (don’t...
