Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas on August 25 as a category 4 hurricane with wind gusts exceeding 150 miles per hour. As Harvey moved inland the forward motion of the storm slowed down and produced tremendous rainfall amounts to southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Historic flooding occurred in Texas and Louisiana as a result of the widespread, heavy rainfall over an 8-day period in Louisiana in August and September 2017. Following the storm event, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrographers recovered and documented 2,123 high-water marks in Texas, noting location and height of the water above land surface. Many of these high-water marks were used to create flood-inundation maps for...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Harris‐Galveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District has produced this dataset of groundwater‐level altitudes and groundwater‐level altitude changes in the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers in the Houston‐Galveston region, Texas. This dataset shows current‐year (2018) groundwater‐level altitudes for each aquifer, 5‐year (2013‐18) groundwater‐level changes for each aquifer, long‐term (1990‐2018 and 1977‐2018) groundwater‐level changes for the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers, and long‐term (2000‐2018) groundwater‐level change for the Jasper aquifer. The groundwater‐level measurements...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and Fort Bend Subsidence District, constructed a finite-difference numerical groundwater-flow model of the northern Gulf Coast aquifer region for 1897 through 2018 using MODFLOW 6 with the Newton formulation solver to simulate groundwater flow and land-surface subsidence. Model parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis were conducted with PEST++ Iterative Ensemble Smoother software. The simulated results are described in the associated U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1877. The model archive provided in this U.S. Geological Survey data release includes all the necessary files to run the MODFLOW 6 model and...

In September 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, collected groundwater-level elevation data and water-quality samples from monitoring wells at the Many Diversified Interests, Inc. Superfund Site in Houston, Texas to evaluate the status of groundwater contamination at this previously remediated site. The dataset includes groundwater-level elevations and field properties measured at 12 monitoring wells along with data from environmental and quality assurance and quality control water-quality samples collected at each well. Water-quality samples were analyzed for arsenic, manganese, molybdenum, benzo(a)pyrene, and petroleum hydrocarbons.

This dataset documents for 2018 the depth to groundwater measured in wells screened in the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers in the Houston‐Galveston region, Texas. The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset in cooperation with the Harris‐Galveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District. This dataset was created to provide resource managers, public officials, researchers, and the general public with ready access to accurate, impartial, scientific information regarding the depth to groundwater in the region. All of the data in this dataset were collected from December 2017 through March 2018 and are stored in the National Water...
