The Beaufort Sea coast in Arctic Alaska and neighboring northern Canada has recently experienced extreme and accelerated climate change, including a dramatic reduction in summer sea ice. The Beaufort Sea coast in arctic Alaska and neighboring northern Canada has recently experienced extreme and accelerated climate change, including a dramatic reduction in summer sea ice (Gildor and Tziperman 2003, Holland et al. 2006). This absence of ice allows increased wind and wave energy to directly affect the coast, resulting in island and mainland flooding, coastal erosion, and further movement of barrier islands and beaches. The period each year in which the arctic is free of summer ice is increasing and is predicted to increase non-linearly in the future. The Adapt Alaska Collaborative grew out of a set of initiatives to promote climate resilience and adaptation in Alaska. On May 24 and 25, 2017 a group of participants (including representatives of Alaska regional, state and federal agencies and organizations) gathered at a work session to identify next steps to build on the momentum generated by these initiatives toward a more resilient Alaska. The purpose of this Traditional Knowledge (TK) research is to document important habitat characteristics of the selected focal fish and wildlife species based on the observations of traditional land users. The information may be used to develop habitat models to show where these specific fish and wildlife habitats occur across the Yukon North Slope. The Traditional Knowledge may also be used to validate other types of habitat mapping or to identify specialized habitats such as movement corridors, denning areas, wintering areas.
Natural resource managers and native communities have expressed a need for effectively synthesizing traditional knowledge and western science data. Often wildlife management plans are based on remotely sensed data and data collected by wildlife biologists. These data may not reflect the variables that are important to the local users, including the scale of information, names describing places or habitats, or how seasonality affects the wildlife available for harvest. Lack of complete snow cover for the past 3 winters in southwestern Alaska has forced agencies to postpone moose surveys due to the likelihood of underestimating the population/lack of comparability to previous surveys. Poor snow conditions lower the sightability of moose, yet, for most regions of Alaska, the variation in moose sightability during suboptimal conditions has not yet been quantified. Because scientists are predicting less snowfall in this region over the long term, we initiated research to estimate sightability correction factors (SCF_c) using radiocollared animals to apply to abundance estimates obtained via the GeoSpatial Population Estimator (GSPE) method. The Yukon North Slope (YNS) has been and remains a core hunting territory of the Inuvialuit of the Canadian Western Arctic. From their communities in Aklavik and Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, the Inuvialuit rely on the Yukon North Slope for their subsistence livelihood. They travel by boat, foot, allterrain vehicle or skidoo to hunt, trap and fish along the coast, foothills and mountains of the Yukon North Slope (YNS). The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) initiated the development of an Arctic Coastal Impressions booklet and photographic exhibit. In the exhibit, there were dozens of spectacular photos of the Arctic coastline. The images were collected along 10,000 km (6,000 mi) of shoreline in Alaska during 2012 and 2013. Many of the images were selected for their artistic composition – sculpted shapes, mosaics of colors or juxtaposition of odd features. They also provide insight into how coastal landforms develop and the significance of these features within the broader Arctic ecosystem. Each image has a story to tell and interpretive materials will accompany the collection.
