Water velocities and discharge were measured in the lock chamber and immediately downstream of Brandon Road Lock on the Des Plaines River at river mile 286 on December 9-10, 2014 using Teledyne RDI Rio Grande 600 and 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with a differential GPS receiver with submeter accuracy. These ADCP measurements were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). Velocity measurements were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013) to derive temporally- and spatially-averaged water velocity values. Discharge measurements were processed with the QRev discharge...
In the spring of 1996, a nine-day test flood from Glen Canyon Dam involved the deepest and largest hypolimnetic withdrawals from the penstocks and the river outlet works (ROW) since 1986, interacting with ongoing hydrodynamic and stratification patterns to enhance freshening of the hypolimnion of Lake Powell reservoir and its tailwaters. Prior to the test flood, a six-year drought had produced a pronounced meromictic hypolimnion that was weakening from high inflow events in 1993 and 1995. Hypoxia, however, had continued to increase in the deepest portions of the reservoir. Over the course of the test flood, 0.893 km3 were released from the ports located at and below the hypolimnetic chemocline. The increased discharge...

Real-time, high frequency (1-second sample interval) GPS location, water quality, and water isotope (δ2H, δ18O) data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex (CSC), located in the northern San Francisco Bay Delta (SFBD). Data was collected on 10/01/2014 for an approximate 4-hour period (10:30 – 14:30 h PST) while underway on the R/V Mary Landsteiner, a 26-foot USGS vessel. Sample water was pumped continuously through a pickup tube, passed through a 178 micron pre-filter, a de-bubbler, and diverted through a 0.2 micron filter and an unfiltered flow path to water quality instrumentation. The real-time data were recorded using a Campbell Scientific CR-6 data logger. Water isotopes (δ2H, δ18O) were logged to a separate...

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is evaluating the placement of dredged material in the nearshore areas of Lake Michigan as a means to replenish sand at selected beaches. In order to elucidate the physical processes in the nearshore environment that transport and distribute sand to the beach, the USACE-Chicago District and the US Geological Survey (USGS) developed a plan for a beach nourishment study on Lake Michigan near Burns Harbor/Ogden Dunes, Indiana. As part of this plan, the USGS conducted hydrodynamic and bathymetric surveys of the study area before and after placement of dredged material in the nearshore zone. The planned placement of dredge material in the study area occurred between June 15, 2016...

Flow discharges were measured in the Des Plaines River immediately downstream of the Brandon Road Lock at river mile 286 on December 9, 2014 a using Teledyne RDI Rio Grande 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with a differential GPS receiver with submeter accuracy. These flow discharge measurements were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). ADCP data were collected and initially reviewed in the WinRiver II software. Final review of discharge measurements was completed using the QRev discharge computation and review software version 3.35 (Mueller, 2016). The output from QRev includes an XML document...
