These data were compiled to assess physiological responses of plants to short-term changes in streamflow, both increased and decreased. Objective(s) of our study were to determine the degree to which plants with different habitat preferences and functional strategies responded to short-term increases or decreases in the elevation of the water table. These data represent streamflow rates, temperature, and metrics of plant water status. These data were collected in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area from March 13-27, 2021, and collected by the U.S. Geological Survey-Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center. Streamflow data were obtained from the Lees Ferry gage station, and temperature data were obtained from...

These data provide beryllium-7 (7Be) and excess lead-210 (210Pbxs) activity for fine-grained, mobile, streambed sediment in the Black Creek, Indiana (IN) stream-channel network. This basin is monitored in cooperation with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). During the period July 22-25, 2019 (summer low flow), the thickness and spatial extent of soft, mobile, fine-grained (mainly silt and clay) streambed sediment was inventoried and sampled along 150-meter (m) transects. A combination of stream corridor land-use distribution, valley type, channel slope, stream order (Strahler, 1957), and ecoregion (Omernik and Griffith, 2014) was used to select 30 rapid geomorphic assessment reaches using methods of Fitzpatrick...

This child item dataset contains a point shapefile of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) observations made during the 2018 survey, and includes measurements of bathymetry, water level elevation, and water column depth along transects of the Old Erie Canal. This data release contains spatial datasets of bathymetry, water velocity, water quality, and infrastructure of a 30.8 mile reach of the Old Erie Canal between the Town of DeWitt and its junction with the current Erie Canal of the New York State Canal System in Verona, near Rome, New York during 2018 and 2019.
This data release consists of tables with the thickness and particle-size characteristics of overbank sediment deposited in May 1978 along the valley of Powder River in southeastern Montana. About 900 sediment samples were collected at regularly-spaced distances from 20 valley transects along a 90-kilometer reach of Powder River between Moorhead and Broadus, Montana. The decrease in sediment thickness and particle size with distance from the main channel showed weak trends, which were caused by the variability introduced by vegetation sediment traps and subsidiary channels.

Legacy mine waste from the Clark Fork River in Western Montana has contributed 100 million tons of tailings into the watershed between 1880 and 1982 (E.D. Andrews, Longitudinal dispersion of metals in the Clark Fork River, Montana, Lewis Publishers, 1987). Tailings deposited along the floodplain, streambanks and river channel continue to contribute metal contaminated material into the river in the form of metal-enriched particulate matter or seston, comprising a mixture of organic and inorganic materials (J.N. Moore and S.N. Luoma, Hazardous wastes from large-scale metal extraction: A case study. Environmental Science and Technology, v.24:1278-1285, 1990). Metal enriched seston poses a dietary exposure risk to filter-feeding...

This dataset is a digital representation of the contours presented on Plate 1 of Regional Water Table (2016) in the Mojave River and Morongo Groundwater Basins, Southwestern Mojave Desert, California: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigation Map, doi:10.5066/sim3391, published by Meghan C. Dick and Adam R. Kjos. It is a continuation...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), has constructed a new spatially distributed Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) for the Merced River Basin (Koczot and others, 2021), which is a tributary of the San Joaquin River in California. PRMS is a deterministic, distributed-parameter, physical-process-based modeling system developed to evaluate the response of streamflow and basin hydrology to various combinations of climate and land use (Markstrom and others, 2015). Although further refinement may be required to apply the Merced PRMS for official streamflow forecast operations, this application of PRMS is calibrated with intention to simulate (and...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity, characterizing aquifer systems, and documenting the effects of oil field water injection in the Elk Hills Elk Hills, Buena Vista, and Coles Levee Oil Fields, San Joaquin Valley, California. Data provided in this data release include borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of water samples, hydrologic data, geological formation depths, and information on observed well log resistivity anomalies—interpreted to be from injection for disposal of produced water from oil wells or from natural causes. The data reported here were...

The dataset documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the North Delta of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The dataset includes surface mapping, depth profile, and discrete data for nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll as well as information about phytoplankton community composition. Data-collection cruises were conducted over two time periods in July and October 2018 across two flooded islands with dense submerged aquatic vegetation beds. Little Hastings Tract received an herbicide treatment by the California Department of Boating...

This report provides a full digitization of historic groundwater-quality and depth-to-water data from Mendenhall and others (1916) Water Supply Paper 398, “Ground Water in San Joaquin Valley, California” in a modern format suitable for further analysis of California’s water supply resources. Included are geochemical data for over 400 wells collected by Mendenhall in the fall of 1910, as well as depth-to-water and well construction information from over 4000 wells compiled by his team from over 15 years of well surveys throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Additionally, these data provide geospatial and geochemical data for sampled wells in California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) in support of the publication: Jeffrey...

As part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have partnered to evaluate agricultural conservation practices focused on nutrient management. Monitoring methods allow for rapid assessment of water-quality changes in response to conservation efforts by focusing on subsurface-tile drainage and direct surface runoff from fields. Estimated daily loads presented within this dataset are from five surface-runoff monitoring stations (USGS station identification number 441624088045601, approximated drainage area of 4.17 hectare; USGS station identification number 441546088082001,...

From June 19–22, 2018, bathymetric, water velocity, and water temperature data were collected on the St. Croix River between St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, and Stillwater, Minnesota. These data were collected with a Teledyne RD Instruments RiverRay acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and georeferenced using a Trimble R10 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver connected to a real-time virtual reference station (VRS) network. The GNSS receiver was mounted directly above the ADCP and data were read directly into the ADCP data collection software. Bathymetry, water temperature, and detailed, three-dimensional water velocity data were collected at 26 cross sections over the 47.8-kilometer (km) survey reach...

This data set contains water depths and velocities measured with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) used to develop a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model was used to inform fish spawning habitat remediation projects in the Detroit River near Belle Isle. Prior to construction of three fish spawning reefs in 2016, ADCP measurements were made throughout the study area in 2014 and 2016. ADCP surveys were repeated in 2017 following the construction of the reefs. Water velocity measurements made prior to reef construction were used to calibrate the CFD model predicting the flow field over the remediation sites during pre-construction conditions. Following calibration, the...
