Impervious runoff-discharge to receiving streams is widely recognized as one of the leading factors contributing to ecological degradation in such streams. Although there are many factors that contribute to ecological degradation with increasing development adverse effects caused by runoff quality is widely recognized as a contributing factor. The objective of this study was to simulate the flows concentrations and loads of impervious-area runoff and stormflows from an undeveloped area over a range of impervious percentages and drainage areas to examine potential relations between these variables and the quantity and quality of downstream flows. Stormwater runoff in a hypothetical stream basin that represents hydrologic...

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is a nation of more than thirty low-lying atolls and islands, most of which are inhabited, dispersed across an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) over 770,000 square miles in the tropical central North Pacific Ocean. Monitoring environmental conditions for potential drought risk is challenging in such a dispersed Island nation, and current drought hazard products provide generalities regarding conditions on a broad geographic scale. A team of USGS scientists and managers of natural resources and natural hazards in the RMI used IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) satellite estimates of precipitation to develop content and a template for timely monthly reporting...

Heavy rainfall occurred across Pennsylvania on September 1 and 2, 2021, as a result of the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Much of eastern and southcentral Pennsylvania received five to ten inches of rain and most of the rainfall occurred in a little more than six hours. Widespread substantial flooding occurred in the area, particularly impacted was the city of Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Flood frequencies were computed for 52 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages impacted by the flooding in eastern and southcentral Pennsylvania using peak flow data through 2021. Flood documentation maps showing the extent and depth of flooding from the September 1-2, 2021, event were generated for five communities in southeastern...

The High Resolution National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus HR) is an integrated datset of geospatial data layers, including the most current National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), the 10-meter 3D Elevation Program Digital Elevation Model (3DEP DEM), and the National Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD). The NHDPlus HR combines the NHD, 3DEP DEMs, and WBD to create a stream network with linear referencing, feature naming, "value added attributes" (VAAs), elevation-derived catchments, and other features for hydrologic data analysis. The stream network with linear referencing is a system of data relationships applied to hydrographic systems so that one stream reach "flows" into another and "events" can be tied to and...

This data release contains tabular data (comma-separated-value files) of natural radiogenic isotopes of strontium, uranium, and thorium for samples of modern water, speleothems, associated with Fitton Cave, north central Arkansas, as well as rock that host the cave deposits. In addition, U-series ages (230Th/U dates and model 234U/238U dates) are calculated from those data for subsamples of speleothems. Stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon are reported for a subset of the stalagmite samples. Sample locations and descriptions as well as specific sub-sample imagery and narrative explanations are included as information supporting the analyses. Selected results are depicted as data plots in an accompanying Excel spreadsheet...

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts between July 19th and 31st, 2021 over a large stretch of the McKenzie River in Oregon using high accuracy surveying technologies. The work was initiated as an effort to validate commercially acquired topobathymetric light detection and ranging (lidar) data that was collected coincidentally between July 26th and 30th, 2021 for the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). The goal was to compare and validate the airborne lidar data to topographic, bathymetric, structural, and infrastructural data collected through more traditional means (e.g., Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS) surveying). Evaluating these data will provide valuable...

The agro-hydrologic VegET (VegetationEvapotranspiration) model uses a water balance approach to simulate daily soil moisture (SM), actual evapotranspiration (ETa), and runoff (R). We enhanced the model to include snow accumulation and melt processes along with the separation of runoff into surface runoff and deep drainage and implemented the code using cloud technology. This publication is providing the supporting data for the updated methods and provides evaluation results for the United States and the Greater Horn of Africa.
