In a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, detectable concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were found in the soil at every site despite targeting locations with no known PFAS sources (Santangelo and others, 2022). The widespread distribution of PFAS concentrations in New Hampshire has since sparked critical interest into understanding whether recharge to groundwater contains significant concentrations of PFAS after infiltration through soils. To address this concern, the USGS implemented a pilot study designed to evaluate whether PFAS infiltrate through shallow soil into shallow groundwater. Five sites were selected...

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model using MODFLOW-NWT was developed to evaluate historical and potential stream capture in the lower Humboldt River Basin, Nevada. The Humboldt River Basin is the only river basin that is contained entirely within the state of Nevada. The effect of groundwater pumping on the Humboldt River is not well understood. Tools are needed to determine stream capture and manage groundwater pumping in the Humboldt River Basin. Previous work has demonstrated that the river’s surface-water resource is sensitive to groundwater withdrawals, which have steadily increased since the 1950s for agriculture, municipal, and mining uses. A numerical groundwater flow model was developed for the purpose...

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model was developed in 1997 to evaluate the groundwater flow system at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Base Kitsap, Bremerton, Washington (https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/wri964147). In 2016, a regional groundwater flow model for the greater Kitsap Peninsula was developed (https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sir20165052). Using information from the 2016 regional model, the 1997 groundwater flow model for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard was updated with a new interpretation of the underlying hydrogeologic units, a refined model grid, and improved recharge estimates. A steady-state model version was constructed in MODFLOW-NWT to simulate equilibrium conditions. MODPATH forward...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) has collected survey data on the Still River in Danbury, Connecticut. This data release contains high-precision survey data of bathymetric stream channel cross-sections and hydraulic structure data for bridges, culverts, and dams.

U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists completed a data collection campaign from the 25th of April to the 10th of June in 2022, using various methods to record geomorphic and habitat indicators throughout 30 streams on the Delmarva Peninsula. Field methods included GNSS surveys, gravelometer-based pebble count readings, visual assessments, and riparian analyses. This metadata record contains all raw observations from the campaign as well as numerous summary metrics to be used in model development. Those "model-ready" data can be found in Delmarva_Model_Deliverable.csv in the parent item, while the two child items containing raw in-channel observations and raw survey data. Attached to this release is a data dictionary...

This archive documents a Soil Water Balance (SWB) model of the The White River Basin, Washington and immediate surrounding environs. The SWB model is used to estimate surface processes of a water budget including precipitation, interception, evapotranspiration, surface runoff, etc. for the upper White River area from January 1999 - December 2020.
Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9W148A1. This dataset is part of the National Water Census Water Budget Estimation and Evaluation Project's ongoing development of best estimates of daily historical water budgets for about 100,000 hydrologic units across the United States. In this release, estimates of soil moisture and recharge are added to the already released estimates of streamflow and precipitation. All these estimates are made available per twelve-digit hydrologic unit code watershed as contained in the NHDPlusV2 dataset. As this project progresses, it is expected that a complete closed water budget generated from the same water budget...
This data release includes cross section survey data collected during site visits to USGS gaging stations located throughout the Willamette and Delaware River Basins and multispectral images of these locations acquired as close in time as possible to the date of each site visit. In addition, MATLAB source code developed for the Bathymetric Mapping using Gage Records and Image Databases (BaMGRID) framework is also provided. The site visit data were obtained from the Aquarius Time Series database, part of the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), using the Publish Application Programming Interface (API). More specifically, a custom MATLAB function was used to query the FieldVisitDataByLocationServiceRequest...

This data release includes one comma delimited table that represents a summary of source and target samples collected for White Clay Creek between 2020 and 2023, in support of sediment fingerprinting modelling. This table contains sediment sample information and results of particle size, elemental composition, and fallout radionuclide analyses. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. First posted - October 18, 2023 (available from author). Revised - March 28, 2024 (version 2.0). This data release has been revised to include data from samples collected in 2023 that were not published in version 1.0.

Total Nitrogen models are still in development and are not yet available. Anticipated availability is early April 2024. Information on this page will be edited as needed. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the York County Planning Commission and York County Conservation District, has collected discrete stream samples for analysis of suspended-sediment, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus concentrations at six real-time streamflow and water-quality monitoring (turbidity and nitrate) stations located in York County, Pennsylvania. Data were collected from 2019-2023 at these stations for the application of predicting suspended-sediment, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus concentrations using...
