FY2016This project will evaluate the effects of vegetation treatments on population connectivity, genetic diversity and gene flow of wildlife species across the full extent of the Great Basin LCC. The recently approved BLM and Forest Service Land Use Plan Amendments will implement millions of acres of treatments in support of greater sage-grouse conservation. It is essential to evaluate the potential benefits and risks of these treatments on the connectivity and fragmentation of the landscape for multiple non-target species. We will use a dynamic landscape model to simulate fire and treatments, allowing each to vary by type (e.g., juniper removal, prescribed fire), extent, and influence on vegetation and fuels....

This report summarizes activities and data collection outcomes for Cooperative Agreement Award F16AC01182, specifically those research activities conducted as a multi-scale assessment of the effects of juniper removal on songbird, small mammal, and raptor/corvid species. In 2017, we conducted 270 surveys for songbirds, 10 surveys for small mammals, and 77 surveys for avian predators that potentially affect greater sage-grouse. We detected 45 songbird species, 6 mammal species, and 9 species of aerial predators. Data collected by PhD student Aaron Young (aarony@uidaho.edu) will be used as part of a doctoral dissertation. Final products are expected to include a final report, a graduate student dissertation and associated...

FY2016This project will address limited tribal capacity for vulnerability assessment by providing guidance and data tailored to the needs and capacities of Northwest and Great Basin tribes. Specifically, the project will:1) Make the vulnerability assessment process more accessible to tribal staff by providing online guidance materials targeted to tribal needs and capacities;2) Address the demand for climate data at the scale of tribal decision-making by providing downscaled climate data and climate change summaries for tribes; and3) Support tribal staff through the vulnerability assessment process via workshops and a webinar to provide training on the use of project resources and datasets, and by staffing a Tribal...

FY2015Study the wildlife impacts of the Bruneau-Owyhee Sage-grouse Habitat (BOSH) project. (The removal of approximately 600,000 acres of western juniper across a landscape of ~1.5 million acres over the next generation in an attempt to reverse sage-grouse habitat loss caused by woodland encroachment.) Monitor the effects of the BOSH project on wildlife by understanding effects of habitat treatments conducted in support of greater sage-grouse on other wildlife critical to inform federal management plans. Collect and analyze data on wildlife and habitat responses at multiple control levels and in predetermined areas. Methods are described in the full proposal submitted and collection of data will occur for at least...

FY2016Develop and utilize both correlative and experimental approaches to evaluate effects of different intensities of spring cattle grazing on sage-grouse habitat selection, insect abundance, and sage-grouse demographic and behavioral traits. Collect data and document the effects of different levels of spring cattle grazing intensity on:1) sage-grouse demographic traits; 2) abundance and biomass of arthropods; 3) sage-grouse nest concealment and other vegetation/habitat features.Analyze the relationship between cattle grazing and sage-grouse demography at multiple spatial scales and evaluate the effects of experimental changes in cattle grazing on sage-grouse reproductive parameters.
