This dataset combines "key ecological values" within intact forest landscapes in order to identify what can be called "key ecological areas" that is, the most valuable areas from an ecological perspective. Although intact forest landscapes have intrinsic value in themselves, identifying "key ecological values" within intact forest landscapes is challenging due to the limited amount of information on most remaining intact areas. We assessed plant interspaces in July 2007 using continuous line intercepts in twice-replicated pastures of northern mixed-grass prairie with contrasting grazing treatments: 1) long-term (25 yr) heavily grazed, dominated by the bunchgrass blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), and 2) ungrazed, dominated by the rhizomatous grass western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii). The number of plant interspaces was 26% higher in pastures heavily grazed, but the amount of soil surface occupied by plant interspaces was 27% greater without grazing. It is an index of mostly natural, high-diversity areas potentially resilient to climate change. This indicator was most recently updated in Blueprint 2.2 to incorporate more recent data from TNC’s Resilient Land project.
