Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas on August 25 as a category 4 hurricane with wind gusts exceeding 150 miles per hour. As Harvey moved inland the forward motion of the storm slowed down and produced tremendous rainfall amounts to southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Historic flooding occurred in Texas and Louisiana as a result of the widespread, heavy rainfall over an 8-day period in Louisiana in August and September 2017. Following the storm event, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrographers recovered and documented 2,123 high-water marks in Texas, noting location and height of the water above land surface. Many of these high-water marks were used to create flood-inundation maps for...

Large and small connected lakes throughout the CYR study area support a rich biodiversity of aquatic organisms and represent important foraging and breeding habitat for fish, waterfowl, and shorebirds. Additionally, lakes provide important recreational opportunities and food resources for local residents (e.g., subsistence harvest of fish and wildlife). Small and large lakes were identified based on the definition used in Arp and Jones (2009) to differentiate small (less than 0.1 sq km) from medium and large lakes (greater than 0.1 km2). Lake connections, especially for smaller lakes, can vary greatly and change throughout the open-water season, with ephemeral connections commonly occurring during high flows in...

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) are used to portray surface water on The National Map. The NHD represents the drainage network with features such as rivers, streams, canals, lakes, ponds, coastline, dams, and streamgages. The WBD represents drainage basins as enclosed areas in eight different size categories. Both datasets represent the real world at a nominal scale of 1:24,000-scale, which means that one inch of The National Map data equals 2,000 feet on the ground. To maintain mapping clarity not all water features are represented and those that are use a moderate level of detail. The NHD and WBD are digital vector datasets used by geographic information systems (GIS)....

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The elevation contour data was created based on bathymetry obtained in the meander reach collected in about a one month period extending from 6/3/2010 - 6/19/2010. This subset data extends from river kilometer designator 228 upstream to 237. Similar methods used to collect and process the bathymetry are described in Fosness (2013). The contours were created from a surface raster (also referred to as digital elevation model) of the...

Water levels in 93 wells completed in the Wood River Valley aquifer system were measured during October 22–24, 2012; these wells are part of a network established by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2006. Maps of the October 2012 water-table altitude in the unconfined aquifer and the potentiometric- surface altitude of the confined aquifer have similar topology to those on maps of October 2006 conditions. Between October 2006 and October...

These data present a ground-water inventory of existing geospatial data and other information needed to determine the extent and characteristics of the aquifers in the Tahoe Basin. Geospatial and other data include geologic maps and soil surveys of the entire basin and for specific watersheds within the basin at the best available scales; vegetation remote-sensing datasets; well information from various local, state, and federal...

Polygons delineate generalized areas in and around Great Basin National Park where surface-water resources likely or potentially are susceptible to groundwater withdrawals in adjacent valleys.

Correlation of flows at pairs of streamgages were evaluated using a Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient to better identify gages that can be used as index gages to estimate daily flow at ungaged stream sites in West Virginia. Correlation maps were developed for each candidate index streamgage using ordinary kriging, and have been compiled as grids. Sets of grids were developed for correlation of daily flows of streamgages on unregulated...

Vegetation type and density data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center at three locations in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected in Lindsey Slough in April 2017, and Middle River and the Mokelumne River in March 2018. Vegetation samples were collected by divers, and used to determine dry biomass density. These data were collected as part of a cooperative project, with the USGS California Water Science Center and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, on the effects of invasive aquatic vegetation on sediment transport in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

The High Resolution National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus HR) is an integrated set of geospatial data layers, including the best available National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), the 10-meter 3D Elevation Program Digital Elevation Model (3DEP DEM), and the National Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD). The NHDPlus HR combines the NHD, 3DEP DEMs, and WBD to create a stream network with linear referencing, feature naming, "value added attributes" (VAAs), elevation-derived catchments, and other features for hydrologic data analysis. The stream network with linear referencing is a system of data relationships applied to hydrographic systems so that one stream reach "flows" into another and "events" can be tied to and traced...
