Album caption and index card: View of Cinnabar Mountain and the Devil's Slide on the Yellowstone, 10 miles above the second canyon. It is a mountain of alternate beds of limestone, sandstone, quartzites and volcanic dikes, elevated to a very nearly vertical position, with the softer strata so worn away as to leave the harder and more enduring ridges standing. View includes only the central portion of the long series of ridges. Prominent among them are two parallel walls, 50 feet apart and 200 feet in height, running up the mountain side 1,500 feet. Between the walls on one side is a band of bright vermilion-tinted clay, which has been mistaken for cinnabar, and hence the name Cinnabar Mountain. Park County, Montana....
