Descriptive Catalog of the Photographs of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories, W. H. Jackson, Photographer, Second Edition, Illustrated, 1871 Series, page 32-33, Nos. 318, 319, 320: Bear Lake, about halfway between Soda Springs and Evanston, ten miles in length, and from five to eight in breadth. The boundary-line between Idaho and Utah passes directly across the lake from east to west. It is a beautiful lake, set like an emerald among the mountains, and not even the Yellowstone presents such exquisite coloring. The elevation is 5,911 feet.

Jackson, Photographer, Second Edition, Illustrated, 1871 Series, page 31, No. 301: The odometer, made by attaching a pair of shafts to the fore wheels of an ambulance, to the spokes of which were attached the instruments that recorded their revolutions, and measured the surface of the country over which we passed. These were the first wheels that were ever taken into this little-know region.
