This shapefile is the official boundary of the Hawaii Fish Habitat Partnership. The shapefile was developed in 2013 to reflect the boundary as defined by the Hawaii Fish Habitat Partnership, a recognized Fish Habitat Partnership (FHP) of the National Fish Habitat Partnership.
Hawai‘i’s endangered waterbirds have experienced epizootics caused by ingestion of prey that accumulated a botulinum neurotoxin produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum (avian botulism; Type C). Waterbird carcasses, necrophagous flies, and their larvae initiate and spread avian botulism, a food-borne paralytic disease lethal to waterbirds. Each new carcass has potential to develop toxin-accumulating necrophagous vectors amplifying outbreaks and killing hundreds of endangered birds. Early carcass removal is an effective mitigation strategy for preventing avian intoxication, toxin concentration in necrophagous and secondary food webs, and reducing the magnitude of epizootics. However, rapid detection...

Introduction Potential offsite impacts to public and ecosystem health from exposure to current-use pesticides and other organic contaminants are a growing concern in Hawaiʻi. In response to these concerns, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture (HDOA), initiated a comprehensive pesticide-monitoring program of surface water in Hawaiʻi in 2016. The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health (HDOH) is collaborating by providing technical and scientific assistance. The objectives of the Hawaiʻi pesticide-monitoring program include (1) documenting the occurrence and distribution of current-use pesticides in surface water of geographically distinct agricultural...

Genetic diversity levels, effective population size estimates, and population structure of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus semotus, also known as Aeorestes semotus) were examined across the islands of Hawai‘i, Maui, O‘ahu, and Kaua‘i using eighteen nuclear microsatellite loci and one mitochondrial gene from 339 individuals collected between 1988 and 2020. The study extracted DNA for population genetic analyses from tissue samples, collected from live bats captured as part of ongoing field studies or under rehabilitation care, from bat carcasses collected by local federal and state wildlife agencies and wind energy facilities, and from dried skin specimens at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. Eighteen...

Mosquito-borne avian malaria is a key limiting factor on Hawaiian forest bird populations. Preservation of endemic forest birds and restoration of Hawaiian forest bird communities will rely on mosquito control. While landscape level control is being developed, managers need short term and reliable tools for monitoring and controlling mosquito populations to protect remaining breeding bird populations. As part of a larger study looking at the efficacy of the biopesticide VectoMax FG for control of larval Culex quinquefasciatus, USGS and DOFAW personnel monitored adult mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes japonicus) along the Kawaikoi Stream during late summer, September through November 2016 and 2017. Ten...
We used a stratified-random sampling approach to estimate the total abundance of Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) nest sites across Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Kauaʻi, during 1-7 July 2019. We first identified strata as unique geographic areas of the refuge to account for potential differences in nesting habitat and non-uniform nest site clustering. We then sub-divided strata where we expected high, low, minimal, or no nest site abundance. These distinctions were based on knowledge of shearwater nesting distribution gained while performing extensive ground-searching for tropicbirds across the entire refuge in April and May 2019. We delineated strata boundaries using recent satellite...
During 13-18 May, 2019, we censused red-footed boobies (Sula sula) at Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Kauaʻi. To evaluate ground-based visual counts and assess variability among methods, we employed photographic techniques to count nesting red-footed boobies at KPNWR in three distinct sub-colony areas: Crater Hill East, Crater Hill Interior, and Crater Hill West (see associated data series report for delineation of sub-colony areas). For ground-based photos, we used a Sony a7rii camera (42 megapixel full-frame) equipped with a Sony 100-400mm F4.5-5.6G lens to allow sufficient resolution to count nests and birds. We achieved pixel resolutions (as a function of camera resolution, focal length, and...

This layer depicts the status, or degree of disturbance, to plant communities on the main Hawaiian Islands. Several layers were uset to create this version (v 3.4). The original HabQual layer was developed by Jon Price and Jim Jacobi based on the mapped land cover units from the Hawaii GAP analysis program (Gon et al. 2006). This map was revised by combining data on land use and the “Bare” category from the NOAA C-CAP 2005 map (NOAA National Ocean Service Coastal Services Center 2012), and adding road corridors to the heavily disturbed category based on the Tiger Roads layer (United States Census Bureau 2014). Additionally, corrections were made to this version of the map by visually inspecting previously mapped...

-- Methods -- The Weather Research and Forecast model (WRF) is applied to construct triply-nested meshes. The outermost domain (20-km horizontal resolution) is large enough to cover almost the whole tropical and subtropical areas from the central Pacific to the western Pacific. The intermediate domain has 4-km horizontal resolution, and the innermost domain of each individual island has a horizontal resolution of 0.8 km. The driving fields for the atmosphere are the NASA Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications reanalysis, and the sea surface temperature (SST) is from NOAA. Variables in the driving fields include temperature, wind, geopotential height, water vapor, etc. For the future runs,...

In the expectation that global climate will change steadily in the coming decades, this research project had the goal to obtain a more detailed view of the climatic changes that Hawai’i could experience by the mid and late 21st century. Given the importance of rainfall for Hawaiian ecosystems and freshwater reserves, this project investigated past seasonal rainfall pattern and developed a statistical model to estimate future rainfall changes for the major islands. As a result of this research, high-resolution maps and data are now available that researchers can use to study potential impacts on endangered species, or use the rainfall changes as input in decision-support tools. This data product provides data files...
As part of a larger study looking at the ecology and potential control of larval Culex quinquefasciatus, USGS and Hawaii DOFAW personnel surveyed a kilometer long reach of the Kawaikoi Stream for larval mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus), potential larval mosquito habitat and non-target aquatic macroinvertebrates during late summer, September through November 2016 and 2017. Along each 10-meter section of the stream, 20 dip samples were taken (when possible) to record the presence of mosquito immatures (larvae and pupae) and macroinvertebrate encountered. Sampling was restricted to stream margins, perched pools, rock holes and back waters. No swift water was sampled. The number of discreet pools per 10-meter section...

During 8-11 April, 13-18 May, and 1-7 July 2019, we censused Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) and White-tailed Tropicbird (P. lepturus) nests in Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Kauaʻi, by searching all foot-accessible areas and by searching all cliffs and islets with spotting scopes from remote vantage points. We censused over the course of three visits to account for prolonged and asynchronous nesting. For ground searching, we used previous nest census results, recommendations from the previous Refuge biologist, and knowledge of tropicbird nesting habitat, to focus searches in areas where nesting was likely: along cliff edges and steep slopes, particularly at the base of ironwood trees...

While there have been many maps produced that depict vegetation for the state of Hawai‘i only a few of these display land cover for all of the main Hawaiian Islands, and most of those that were created before the year 2000 have very generalized units or are somewhat inaccurate as a result of more recent land use changes or due to poor resolution (both spatial and spectral) in the imagery that was used to produce the map. Some of the more detailed and accurate maps include the Hawai‘i GAP Analysis (HI-GAP) Land Cover map (Gon et al. 2006), the NOAA C-CAP Land Cover map (NOAA National Ocean Service Coastal Services Center 2012), and the more recently released Hawai‘i LANDFIRE EVT Land Cover map (U.S. Geological Survey...
