Field measurements of various optical properties of the water column were acquired from a single location on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 26-27, 2017, to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly estimation of water depth from passive optical image data. The field measurements included in this data release include several parameters measured with three different instruments. To support research on remote sensing of rivers, specifically estimation of water depth from passive optical image data, hyperspectral image data and supporting depth measurements were collected on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 27, 2017. This data release provides access to hyperspectral image acquired through this project and the supporting field-based measurements of depth and water column optical properties are available through related data releases. Canadian discrete water quality data and daily streamflow records were evaluated using the Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Seasons (WRTDS) model implemented with the EGRET R package (Hirsch et al. 2010, Hirsch and De Cicco 2015). Models were used to estimate loads of solutes and evaluate trends for three constituents of interest (selenium, nitrate, and sulfate). Six models were generated; one model for each of the three constituents of interest, in each of the two major tributaries to Lake Koocanusa: the Kootenay River at Fenwick (BC08NG0009), and the Elk River above Highway 93 Near Elko (BC08NK0003). Pollutant loads have been increasing over time in the Elk River, B.C. due to coal mining operations and runoff from associate spoil piles. The Elk River is a tributary to the Kootenay/Kootenai River and Lake Koocanusa. Extensive water chemistry monitoring has been conducted in Lake Koocanusa to assess the impacts from the Elk River, however, this is not the case for the Kootenai River downstream of Lake Koocanusa, downstream of Libby Dam (http://deq.mt.gov/DEQAdmin/LakeKoocanusa). Discharge measurements and velocity mapping surveys were completed at select tie channels located at Nimz Ranch, on the main-stem Kootenai River. Tie channels convey water and sediments between the main river channel and river floodplain waterbodies. The velocity mapping surveys are used to document how the tie channels interact with the main-stem Kootenai River. Similar surveys will be conducted following project construction completion (after 2021). Velocity mapping provides data to support the flow split estimates in the tie channel reconnection. In 2009, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho released and implemented the Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Master Plan. This plan aimed to restore, enhance, and maintain the Kootenai River habitat and landscape to support and sustain habitat conditions for aquatic species and animal populations. This GIS dataset is the primary data product produced for the NW Climate Science Center-funded project, "Rangewide climate vulnerability assessment for threatened Bull Trout" (FRESC Study ID 851). We used predictions of temperatures in streams across approximately two-thirds of the species' range in the U.S. to map coldwater streams or “patches” suitable for spawning and early rearing of Bull Trout. Each patch consists of streams with contiguous reaches of cold water. Working in cooperation with EPA, the USGS coordinated the collection of fish tissue for processing and analyses by the EPA Region 10 Manchester Environmental Laboratory located in Port Orchard, WA. This effort was being tied to existing operations work performed by state wildlife agencies in Idaho and Montana (Ross and others, 2018). Annually, in late August and September, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP), and the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho conduct population surveys on the Kootenai River. This Data Release presents multi-agency data for selenium concentrations in ecosystem media that includes water column, suspended particulate material, zooplankton, invertebrates, and fish. Because the data are compiled from multiple sources, the significant figures used to report contaminant concentrations and other metrics may not be internally consistent. These data will serve as the basis for ecosystem-scale modeling of Lake Koocanusa, a bi-national reservoir in Montana and British Columbia. Assessment of egg deposition is widely used to provide an index of spawning efforts for lithophilic-spawning fishes. However, little is known about the collection techniques efficacy and bias when collecting fish eggs. We conducted a literature review to assess egg collection methods and evaluate egg retention and capture on egg mats. The literature review provided a summary of different gear types used to collect fish eggs, possible bias from the gears, and egg 'abundance' reporting strategies.

Field spectra were collected from the Kootenai River in northern Idaho during a tracer dye experiment on September 25, 2017, to assess the potential for inferring concentrations of Rhodamine WT dye from remotely sensed data. Reflectance measurements were made from a boat near the confluence with Ball Creek with the Kootenai River using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in reflectance mode. Specifically, the data contained herein is summary data used in four generalized linear mixed models that were developed to assess the biological and hydrologic factors that influence rainbow and brown trout recruitment and adult size in tailwaters across the western United States.

This data release provides in situ field measurements of Rhodamine WT dye concentration acquired during the experiment.
