The NHDPlus Version 1.0 is an integrated suite of application-ready geospatial data sets that incorporate many of the best features of the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and the National Elevation Dataset (NED). The NHDPlus includes a stream network (based on the 1:100,000-scale NHD), improved networking, naming, and "value-added attributes" (VAA's). NHDPlus also includes elevation-derived catchments (drainage areas) produced using a drainage enforcement technique first broadly applied in New England, and thus dubbed "The New-England Method". This technique involves "burning-in" the 1:100,000-scale NHD and when available building "walls" using the national Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD). The resulting modified...

We created an enduring features (EF, ecological site type, geophysical setting) dataset for Oklahoma that is similar to the EF dataset we created for Texas (see Diamond et al. 2016, Diamond and Elliott 2015, Elliott et al. 2014), . Digital soil map unit polygons (MUs), variables derived from digital elevation models (e.g. percent slope), and landform models (e.g. low, gentle slopes and flats in the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains) were combined to form this dataset. Among these, the low flats of the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains were most complicated to model because the sites had a low slope but were occupied by dry-mesic forest (in contrast to the low slope of uplands, which tended to be drier). A combination of slope...

Attempts to stabilize the shore can greatly influence rates of shoreline change. Beach nourishment in particular will bias rates of observed shoreline change toward accretion or stability, even though the natural beach, in the absence of nourishment, would be eroding. Trembanis and Pilkey (1998) prepared a summary of identifiable beach nourishment projects in the Gulf Coast region that had been conducted before 1996. Those records were used to identify shoreline segments that had been influenced by beach nourishment. Supplemental information regarding beach nourishment was collected from agencies familiar with nourishment projects in the State. All records were compiled to create a GIS layer depicting the spatial...

This is the GeoPackage (“TMG_AdditionalArea_Trans.gpkg”) that contains the layer (“main.TMG_Area_Trans”) depicting the spatial extent of the four Additional Survey Area transects that are surveyed during the annual MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial surveys. This GeoPackage (NAD83; ESPG: 3338) was created by Michael Swain in August 2021 and subsequently emailed to Maggie Harings. It includes waterbody units, waterbody types, and waterbody perimeter as well as their areas.Transects do not exist for Cape Simpson as this area is adequately assessed by conducting aerial surveys for lakes only. Piasuk River Delta area is surveyed using a combination of aerial lake surveys and transects. Colville River Delta and Atigaru...

This is an incomplete collection of track files produced during the MBM-AK TLSA molting goose survey flights. They reference latitude, longitude, and time in total seconds in the day. These files are called by R code (‘TMGSurvey_Master_2019.Rmd’ located in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’). Following review of this code, it appears as though these transcripts were not ultimately used in any way. Please consult ‘TMGSurvey_Master_2019.Rmd’ for additional context. Track file naming format is as follows: ‘TR[date][firstInitialLastNameOfObserver].csv’; HWilson refers to Heather Wilson while BShults refers to Brad Shults.

Previous vegetation mapping project has areas along the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma along the Red River where data was missing (gaps) or where overlaps contained contradictory mapped types (overlaps). These areas were corrected with this product. Gaps were corrected using new image objects attributed with landcover from the previous products and new soils data available from NRCS (gSSURGO). Overlaps were corrected by selecting one of the mapped types identified by previous products based on the state boundary provided by the U. S. Census Bureau (500k).

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment (GCVA) used an expert opinion approach to qualitatively assess the vulnerability of four ecosystems: mangrove, oyster reef, tidal emergent marsh, and barrier islands, and a suite of wildlife species that depend on them. More than 50 individuals participated in the completion of the GCVA, facilitated via Ecosystem and Species Expert Teams. The GCVA made use of the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value Assessment (SIVVA) (Reece and Noss 2014) to provide an objective framework for evaluating vulnerability by guiding assessors through a series of questions related to the changes an ecosystem or species might experience due to climate change and other threats. Assessors...

A combination of citizen science inventories and expert assessments will be used to collect critical baseline information on known spring and seep resources using the Spring Ecosystem Inventory and Assessment Protocols and adapting them as needed for the unique arid Sky Island ecosystems. The assessment will collect information on channel morphology, riparian and wetland vegetation, water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and wildlife. This information will be combined with historic data from cooperating agencies (Pima County, Santa Cruz County, USFS, NPA, USGS, USFWS, BLM, and AGFD) in a regional, on-line database to provide a landscape level context for managing resources, which was previously unavailable due...

Sky Island Alliance (SIA) is a non-governmental organizational that works to protect and restore the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island Region. We work with volunteers, scientists, land-owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region’s unique biological diversity. Because of our long-standing collaborative relationships with land managers and our large corps of skilled volunteers, we were in a unique position to spearhead this project.SIA initiated this springs inventory, assessment and management planning project to develop baseline information on springs in the Sky Island...

Linkage Networks’ Synthesis Analysis The focal species and landscape integrity approaches identify habitat concentration areas (HCAs) and core habitats, respectively, and areas of the landscape important for connecting them. As in the Statewide Analysis and the Analysis of the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion (WHCWG, 2010, 2012), we consider that a linkage network consists of the combination of all the HCAs and the linkages modeled for a particular focal species, or core areas and modeled linkages for landscape integrity (WHCWG, 2010). These networks are useful individually, informing decisions pertaining to maintaining and restoring connectivity for the particular focal species (or species considered similar enough in...

This is the collection of raw data was collected during MBM-AK TLSA annual molting goose surveys. Partial quality control has been completed for these data: following each survey, the observer listened to their survey recording that documented counts along transects and then transcribed these findings into these raw datasets (‘raw_data’). The observer listened to their recording a second time in order to confirm that their transcriptions were correct. Further quality control and tidying was completed for these raw data using R scripts noted by the file extension ‘.Rmd’ located in the ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’ folder. Ultimately, these scripts produced final datasets (‘final_data’) containing data used in annual...

The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS. The NED provides the best available public domain raster elevation data of the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and territorial islands in a seamless format. The NED is derived from diverse source data, processed to a common coordinate system and unit of vertical measure. All NED data are distributed in geographic coordinates in units of decimal degrees, and in conformance with the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). All elevation values are provided in units of meters, and are referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) over the conterminous United States. The vertical...

The U.S. Geological Survey has developed a National Elevation Dataset (NED). The NED is a seamless mosaic of best-available elevation data. The 7.5-minute elevation data for the conterminous United States are the primary initial source data. In addition to the availability of complete 7.5-minute data, efficient processing methods were developed to filter production artifacts in the existing data, convert to the NAD83 datum, edge-match, and fill slivers of missing data at quadrangle seams. One of the effects of the NED processing steps is a much-improved base of elevation data for calculating slope and hydrologic derivatives. The specifications for the NED 1 arc second and 1/3 arc second data are: Geographic coordinate...
