These data consist of a multi-trophic, day vs. night, nearshore to offshore transect approach for data collection for this Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative effort at two northwestern Lake Huron sites near Hammond Bay and Thunder Bay, Michigan. Zooplankton and Mysis samples were collected monthly from April-October while benthos and prey fish samples were collected seasonally during Spring, Summer, and Fall. Invertebrate taxa (zooplankton, Mysis, benthic macroinvertebrates) were identified, enumerated, and measured using a dissecting microscope. Diet items of the prey fish were processed similarly to the other samples in terms of taxonomy. These data were used to calculate densities of fish prey items...

Intracoelomic implantation of electronic tags has become a common method in fishery research, but rarely are fish examined by scientists after release to understand the extent that surgical incisions have healed. Walleye (Sander vitreus) are a valuable, highly-exploited fishery resource in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Here, fishery capture of walleye with internal acoustic transmitters combined with a high reward program provided multiple opportunities to examine photographs and quantify the status of surgical incisions. Walleye (n=926) from reef and river spawning populations in Lake Erie and Lake Huron were implanted with acoustic transmitters during spring spawning events from 2011 to 2016. Incisions were closed...

These data consist of larval fish and water profile data collected with a nearshore to offshore transect approach at 9 transects throughout Lake Huron. Larval fish and their stomach contents were identified, enumerated, and measured (if possible) using a dissecting microscope. These data were used to calculate densities of potential fish prey items (what is available in the environment) and compare that to what the fishes ate for selectivity analysis. Larval fish age estimation based on daily growth rings from otoliths was also conducted. These data are in raw form. The water profile data were collected using a bathythermograph and bin-averaged at the 1 m level. Environmental prey data are available at the following...

We investigated fine-scale genetic patterns of the federally threatened Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) on a relatively undisturbed island in northern Michigan, USA. This species often persists in habitat islands throughout much of its distribution due to extensive habitat loss and distance-limited dispersal. These data are from 102 individual Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes sampled at Bois Blanc Island, Michigan and genotyped at 15 microsatellite loci. Samples were collected as part of a study to examine functional connectivity for the Eastern Massasauga. We found that the entire island population exhibited weak genetic structuring with spatially segregated variation in effective migration...

Data included are from a series of field sample collections from Lakes Michigan and Huron, and laboratory mesocosms targeting the round goby fish (Neogobius melanostomus). The round goby is a benthic fish that has heavily invaded four of the five Laurentian Great Lakes. Because it inhabits a variety of substrates, including coastal breakwaters, traditional methods (e.g., trawling, trapping) are inadequate to quantify overall population size. Environmental DNA (eDNA) may be a viable option for improving detection and quantification of the species. Field data include number of round goby caught and associated ambient conditions of the aquatic matrix (temperature, pH, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen). Mesocosm...

During 2018, uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs or 'drones') were used to collect spatially referenced aerial imagery from 20 management units (sites) enrolled in the Phragmites Adaptive Management Framework, a collective learning program developed by the Great Lakes Phragmites Collaborative. Management units were located in Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin (USA). Invasive Phragmites australis (hereafter "Phragmites") had been managed at each management units some time previously by the landowner or land manager, and aerial imagery was then collected to create cover classifications distinguishing live and dead Phragmites from the surrounding landscape using object-based image analysis with training based on ground-truth...

This dataset is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Restoration Assessment (GLCWRA) initiative. These data represent the flowline network in the Upper Peninsula Restoration Assessment (UPRA). It is attributed with the number of disconnections (e.g., road crossings) between the reach and Lake Ontario. The more road crossings on a flowline the more disconnected that area is from the lake and the less suitable it will be for restoration. These data help identify the condition of hydrologic separation between potential restoration areas and Lake Ontario. Low numbers represent fewer disconnections, such as culverts, between the reach and the water body requiring no flow network modification...

This data release includes zooplankton data collected from a collaborative effort for Environmental Protection Agency’s Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI). Zooplankton surveys were conducted during the growing season, from late April to early November, in two Lake Michigan transects in 2010, two Lake Huron transects in 2012, eight Lake Michigan transects in 2015, and nine Lake Huron transects in 2017. Zooplankton samples were collected by whole water-column tows at two or three stations in different bottom-depth categories (i.e., shallow, middle, and deep) in each of the transects. Due to the difference in bathymetry, some transects did not have a deep station. The shallow and middle stations have...

Acoustic seabed classification (ASC) is an important method for understanding landscape-level physical and biological patterns in the aquatic environment. Bottom habitats in the Laurentian Great Lakes are poorly mapped to date, and will require a variety of contributors and data sources to complete. We repurposed a long-term split-beam echosounder dataset gathered for purposes of fisheries assessment to estimate lakebed properties utilizing unsupervised classification of echo return data. We extracted first echo properties and analyzed lakebed hardness and roughness to define and map three statistically supported lakebed classes revealed through cluster analysis. Our results indicate coherent and logical class boundaries,...

Monitoring of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the eggs of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) collected from lakes Huron and Michigan has been conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey since the mid-1990’s. The results of this monitoring effort have been used by natural resource management agencies and native American tribes within the Great Lakes basin to evaluate the reproductive health of lake trout. The data in this release are the thiamine concentrations measured in lake trout collected from 1996-2018. Results are reported as total thiamine (nmol/g-egg), collection site, lake, year collected, and reference to the analysis methods.

These data were derived from hydroacoustic data collected by uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) and powered research vessels. The powered vessels overtook the USVs in Lakes Huron and Michigan to study fish avoidance of survey vessels during traditional acoustic surveys. The water column was divided into three depth groups (epilimnion, metalimnion, hypolimnion) for analysis. Each drone transect was binned into 30-sec intervals and measured hydroacoustic values were averaged in this region. To compare vessels and drones, parallel overtakes (overtakes where vessel and drone followed the same path) which were ~2 km long, were measured by both platforms and the differences between acoustic measures compared.
