These data were collected as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) project template 678-1 entitled "Evaluate immediate and long-term BMP effectiveness of GLRI restoration efforts at urban beaches on Southern and Western Lake Michigan". The development of a reliable method of age estimation for Grass Carp is necessary for the successful management of this invasive species. Multiple federal and state agencies with assistance from commercial fishers collected adult Grass Carp from 2012 to 2018. Ossified parts were collected from these fish, and age estimates from them were compared to develop an age estimation method. Here we provide the data used in that effort.
During 2010 to 2013, waterbird mortality surveillance programs used a shared protocol for shoreline walking surveys performed June to November at three areas in northern Lake Michigan. Timing (to day) and location (to transect) of carcass deposition and species affected were summarized. Using these observations, the broader goal of our study was to quantify the spatial synchrony of avian mortality events and explore whether within-year lake conditions (lake surface temperatures and the presence of algal masses) were related to the magnitude and periodicity of these mortality events. These wetlands act as an important buffer between the open lake and the near-shore areas, as key areas for nutrient cycling, as critical nurseries for many species of lake fish, and as habitat for numerous species of concern. This environmental dataset consists of 56 sediment, 24 Cladophora and 22 water samples collected from beaches at Glen Haven, Good Harbor, Platte Bay and Esch road beach, located within The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Leelanau and Benzie counties, Michigan. The dataset includes matrix type, location, data, time and the qPCR reported value for each sample collected.
Streambed sediment samples were collected in October 2016 from streams tributary to Wisconsin’s western Lake Michigan shoreline. Streams included two Areas of Concern (AOCs), two non-AOC comparisons, and two additional non-AOC study areas. Within the Milwaukee Estuary AOC, samples were collected from the Milwaukee River (three subsites), the Menomonee River (two subsites), the Kinnickinnic River (2 subsites), and the Milwaukee Harbor (one subsite). The Great Lakes Research Vessel Catch (RVCAT) database is managed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). RVCAT has been used as the primary data collection tool aboard the GLSC’s research vessel operations across the Great Lakes. This dataset records Cladophora and associated benthic algae, collectively Cladophora community or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), biomass collected during the growing season of 2018 at stations located along the U.S. shoreline of Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Many taxa of North American unionid mussels are imperiled due to biofouling by invasive dreissenid mussels. Here, we report on biofouling rates of unionid mussels suspended in cages during the growing season in nearshore embayments in Lake Erie (2013-2016), Lake Michigan (Green Bay 2016, Grand Traverse Bay 2015) and Lake Huron (Saginaw Bay 2015). Mussels were deployed in early summer (late May or early June) and retrieved in late summer or fall (late August or early September). Wet weights were collected from mussels before and after removal of biofouling taxa (primarily dreissenid mussels).
These data consist of down-looking images of Lake Michigan benthos, collected in 2020 and 2021 with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Information about each image (i.e., latitude, longitude, depth from surface, altitude, roll, pitch, yaw, and creation time) can be found in the associated csv file. Substrate type was divided into 9 classes based on the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) and each image was assigned a substrate class by at least 3 trained labelers.

The lower Fox River in Wisconsin is a heavily industrialized system and the major tributary to Green Bay within Lake Michigan. The region has been a listed as Area of Concern by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), indicating severe impairment of the ecological health of the system. Remedial action has taken place along the river to remove extensive polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination. Images were collected using an unmanned aerial system over the bluffs of eastern shore of Lake Michigan in Miami Park rural residential area, Allegan County, MI. Images were collected in four separate instances on July 9, August 10, September 1, and October 18, 2019 and cover similar extent. Images were collected to monitor active bluff erosion in the area. The images are presented here in zipped files grouped by month and collection. The images were collected in jpg format and include Exif metadata with GPS date, time, and latitude and longitude, copyright, keywords, and other fields. These files were used in structure-from-motion (SfM) processing to obtain georeferenced 3D data.
