Vegetation change is an important issue facing managers at Isle Royale National Park (ISRO). These data were created using high-resolution imagery collected in the winter of 2017 which was compared to the vegetation map of the National Park published in 2000 (project imagery collected in 1994 and 1996). These data review where vegetation cover type, density, and pattern have changed since imagery collection for the 2000 publication and provide a proposed reason for the change.
This dataset includes pesticides and pesticide transformation products in 15 tributaries of the Great Lakes. Pesticides were monitored using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) to estimate concentrations in water following standard protocols (Alvarez, 2010) in June and July 2016. POCIS extracts were analyzed for 225 chemicals (USGS National Water Quality Laboratory schedule 5437, Sandstrom and others, 2016), for which 129 chemicals also have POCIS uptake rates, allowing calculations of time-weighted mean concentration over the approximately 30 day deployment (Alvarez and others, 2008). Collectively, there were 97 chemicals detected, and time-weighted mean concentrations could be calculated for 95...
Between 1900 and 1932, a copper (Cu) mine operated near Gay, Michigan, along the shore of Lake Superior, discharged approximately 22.8 million metric tons of waste material known as ‘stamp sands’ (SS) to a nearby beach. This pile of SS has migrated via wind and rain along the beaches in northern Grand Traverse Bay and into Buffalo Reef, an important spawning area for Lake Trout and Lake Whitefish. During their first summer, these newly spawned fish consume benthic invertebrates and zooplankton in nearby beach habitats. SS contain elevated concentrations of metals (especially Cu) that are toxic to many invertebrate taxa, and studies have observed very few benthic taxa in areas with very high SS. Here, we sampled...

This dataset is a LAS (industry-standard binary format for storing lidar point clouds) dataset containing light detection and ranging (lidar) data and sonar data representing the beach and near-shore topography of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, near the Duluth entry, Duluth, Minnesota. Average point spacing of the LAS files in the dataset are as follows: lidar, 0.094 meters (m); multibeam sonar, 0.501 m; single-beam sonar, 1.876 m. The LAS dataset was used to create digital elevation models (DEMs) of 10 m (32.8084 feet) and 1 m (3.28084 feet) resolution, of the approximate 1.75 square kilometer surveyed area. Lidar data were collected August 22, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology similar...

This dataset is comprised of three files containing northing, easting, and elevation ("XYZ") information for light detection and ranging (lidar) data representing the beach topography and sonar data representing near-shore topography of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, near the Duluth entry, Duluth, Minnesota. The point data is the same as that in LAS files that were used to create the digital elevation models (DEMs) of the approximate 2.15 square kilometer surveyed area. Lidar data were collected September 07, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). Multibeam sonar data were collected September 06-07, 2022 using a Norbit integrated...
In the Great Lakes basin, there are numerous organizations undertaking scientific monitoring and research efforts with the goal of identifying threats and evaluating management strategies that will protect and restore the Great Lakes ecosystem. Coordination among all these stakeholders is a challenge, and having a centralized location where researchers and managers can identify relevant scientific activities and access fundamental information about these activities is crucial for efficient management. The Science in the Great Lakes (SiGL) Mapper was a map-based discovery tool that spatially displayed basin-wide multidisciplinary monitoring and research activities conducted by both USGS and partners from all five...
These data are digital elevation models (DEMs) of the beach topography and near-shore bathymetry of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, near the Superior entry, Duluth, Minnesota. The DEMs have 1 meter (m; 3.28084 ft) and/or 10 m (32.8084 ft) cell size and was created from a LAS dataset of terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data representing the beach topography and sonar data representing the bathymetry for an approximate 1.78 square kilometer survey area. Average point spacing of the LAS files in the dataset are as follows: lidar, 0.055 meters (m); multibeam sonar, 0.511 m; single-beam sonar, 1.687 m. Lidar data were collected November 01, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology...

This dataset includes per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and pharmaceuticals monitored at 62 sampling sites in tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Chemicals were evaluated in a sediment sample (PFAS only) and water concentrations were estimated using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). Sediment samples were collected from the 62 sites in June and July 2018, which were analyzed for 23 PFAS compounds using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Duplicate sediment samples were collected at 23 sites. Overall, 22 of the 23 sediment PFAS compounds analyzed were detected in samples from at least one site. Pharmaceuticals and PFAS samples were collected instream by deploying...

The elevation contours in this dataset have a 2-foot (ft) interval and were derived from a digital elevation model (DEM) of beach topography and nearshore bathymetry of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. The DEM has a 1 meter (m; 3.28084 ft) cell size and was created from Lidar data representing beach topography and sonar data representing bathymetry extending approximately 700-800 m offshore. The data cover an approximately 1.75 square kilometer survey area. Lidar data were collected November 01, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). Multibeam sonar data were collected October 31-November 01, 2022 using a Norbit...

These datasets are a collaborative and integrated geodatabase of inventoried connectivity barriers within the South Central Lake Superior Basin (SCLSB) was developed to prioritize restoration for more than 2,000 inventoried stream crossings.
Topobathy was surveyed during the fall of 2022 for two locations along Minnesota Point, where past beach nourishment (dredge materials) were placed. These topobathymetric surveys of Minnesota Point and Lake Superior are repeat surveys that will be used evaluate movement of placed material and overall change of near-shore bathymetry. The data was acquired using a lidar sensor, and single-beam and multibeam sonars. The data includes DEMs of the terrestrial beach areas and near-shore bathymetries of Lake Superior near the Duluth and Superior entries of Minnesota Point, 2-foot smoothed contours, LAS and XYZ files. Data were collected in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Detroit District.

As part of the larger Great Lakes Sediment Surveillance Program (GLSSP), the U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Research Laboratory (MRL) partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Minnesota-Duluth to assess contaminant concentrations within surface sediments and sediment cores from the Laurentian Great Lakes. Sediments were assessed for mercury concentrations and mercury stable isotopes to examine spatial trends and sources of mercury within the lakes. In 2021, 30 sites were surveyed in Lake Superior. Mercury concentrations within Lake Superior surface sediment ranged from 1.1 to 161.2 ng/g. Mercury isotopes displayed a range in δ202Hg from -0.12 to -1.74 ‰ with measurable Δ199Hg...
