Annual spring (May) and fall (late October through early November) gillnet assessment surveys were conducted by researchers at the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) in northern Lake Michigan, including the Northern Refuge, between 1998-2023. Total length, weight, sex, maturity, and sea lamprey wounds were recorded for each lake trout and burbot caught in the gill nets. Lake trout were aged: (1) by decoding information on an extracted coded wire tag; (2) using fin clip information; or (3) enumerating annuli on a maxilla bone. Burbot were aged by enumerating annuli on an otolith. Catch of both lake trout and burbot have been recorded for each of the gill nets that have been set. To study the dynamics of the lake...

Monitoring of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the eggs of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) collected from lakes Huron and Michigan has been conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey since the mid-1990’s. The results of this monitoring effort have been used by natural resource management agencies and native American tribes within the Great Lakes basin to evaluate the reproductive health of lake trout. The data in this release are the thiamine concentrations measured in lake trout collected from 1996-2018. Results are reported as total thiamine (nmol/g-egg), collection site, lake, year collected, and reference to the analysis methods.

Northern Lake Michigan lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and burbot (Lota lota) diet data, 2021-2023
These data consist of lake trout and burbot diet information collected from USGS spring and fall gillnet surveys in Northern Lake Michigan from 2021-2023. All prey were identified, enumerated and weighed. Only fish prey had lengths measured.
These data include in situ images of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) collected by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in Lakes Michigan and Superior in 2020 and 2021 and laboratory images of round goby collected by a GoPro in 2021. These images were collected and labeled to train and validate an algorithm for automated fish sizing and biomass estimation. The dataset includes original images, ground truth binary masks, where the designated benthic fish is represented by white pixels and the background by black pixels, and calibration images to correct any type of distortion on the imagery if needed.
Data includes hatch, unfertilized, underdeveloped, and larval mortality count data of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) eggs fertilized from adult gametes collected within Northern Refuge reefs in Lake Michigan conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey Great Lakes Science Center during Fall 2019 gill net survey. Adult lake trout were collected using gill net (4.5, 5.5, and 6.0 inch) panels. Gametes were removed and fertilized in the field and then incubated at the Great Lakes Science Center Aquatic Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, MI. Results are reported as date, collection reef, latitude, longitude, tray number, reef panel, and counts (unfertilized, dead or unsuccessful hatch, hatched, and larval mortality).

USGS Science Data Catalog (SDC),
Great Lakes fishery managers and stakeholders have little information regarding how climate change could affect the management and conservation of fish populations, including those of high recreational and commercial value. USGS scientists worked closely with state management agencies and the National Wildlife Federation to complete several objectives that provide knowledge to aid their planning and management strategies in anticipation of coming changes. First, researchers updated a regional Great Lakes climate model to predict water level changes, water temperatures, and ice cover data for the entire Great Lakes basin 50-100 years into the future. Second, researchers used satellite data to determine whether the...
The Great Lakes Research Vessel Catch (RVCAT) database is managed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). RVCAT has been used as the primary data collection tool aboard the GLSC’s research vessel operations across the Great Lakes. Content: The data set has been collected on various vessel operations on all the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways between the years 1930-2021. Data collection begins in early spring and ends in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission. Data Structure: These data are collected at the GLSC in the RVCAT Oracle database. This database has been broken down into comma separated value (csv) spreadsheets in order to facilitate greater...
These data have been collected on various vessel operations on the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways. This vessel operations data set is part of and connected to a larger database of Great Lakes research that includes trawl and gillnet catch data, sample information of fish species caught, as well as effort applied, operation conditions, and location details. The larger database also contains data on hydroacoustics, ichthyoplankton, zooplankton, zebra mussel, and benthos samples collected. Multiple operations were conducted on all Great Lakes each year (1958-2016) beginning in early spring and ending in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission, which are...
This data release includes thiamine concentration measurements from lake trout eggs and associated biological data (e.g., fish length, weight, sex) and capture location data (e.g., lake, coordinates, date of collection). Lake trout used in this dataset were collected during 2021-2023 from across the Great Lakes and other inland lakes such as the Finger Lakes, New York and Lake Champlain, Vermont.

The RVCAT database contains data that have been collected on various vessel operations on the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways. This section of Reference Tables specifically handles repetitive or standardized information that is called upon in the main tables of the RVCAT database. Reference tables are used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient. All of the terms defined in the reference tables have been determined by the United States Geological Survey, Great Lakes Science Center and it’s partners. Data Quality: Note that the following data release is a snapshot of the database at the time of release. Some data quality checks are still being...
