We created an enduring features (EF, ecological site type, geophysical setting) dataset for Oklahoma that is similar to the EF dataset we created for Texas (see Diamond et al. 2016, Diamond and Elliott 2015, Elliott et al. 2014), . Digital soil map unit polygons (MUs), variables derived from digital elevation models (e.g. percent slope), and landform models (e.g. low, gentle slopes and flats in the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains) were combined to form this dataset. Among these, the low flats of the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains were most complicated to model because the sites had a low slope but were occupied by dry-mesic forest (in contrast to the low slope of uplands, which tended to be drier). A combination of slope...

These data can be used in a geographic information system (GIS) for any number of purposes such as assessing wildlife habitat, water quality, pesticide runoff, land use change, etc. The State data sets are provided with a 300 meter buffer beyond the State border to faciliate combining the State files into larger regions. The user must have a firm understanding of how the datasets were compiled and the resulting limitations of these data. The National Land Cover Dataset was compiled from Landsat satellite TM imagery (circa 1992) with a spatial resolution of 30 meters and supplemented by various ancillary data (where available). The analysis and interpretation of the satellite imagery was conducted using very large,...

LCC funding allowed completion of this BLM initiative to develop a North Slope-wide cover type map and create a crosswalk that integrates all component cover type maps that comprise the larger overall North Slope cover type map. This map is the outcome of a multi-year project to produce a moderate resolution landcover base map for the North Slope of Alaska to serve as a primary base layer for long-term science and planning activities on the North Slope. New Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) 30 meter resolution landcover maps were produced for the far western arctic, and for the area between the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska (NPRA) and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In the NPRA, an existing land cover map from...

Previous vegetation mapping project has areas along the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma along the Red River where data was missing (gaps) or where overlaps contained contradictory mapped types (overlaps). These areas were corrected with this product. Gaps were corrected using new image objects attributed with landcover from the previous products and new soils data available from NRCS (gSSURGO). Overlaps were corrected by selecting one of the mapped types identified by previous products based on the state boundary provided by the U. S. Census Bureau (500k).

Leaders within the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recognized the need for current vegetation datasets and maps to facilitate conservation planning and management. Prior to the initiation of this project, Ecological Mapping System (EMS) datasets had been completed by the Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP) for Texas and Oklahoma. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facilitated meetings among states that highlighted the Texas and Oklahoma datasets. This led state leaders in Kansas and Nebraska to initiate the current project, with the aims of (1) producing the highest quality digital and map datasets possible, and (2) leveraging funds from each...

We will work with Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners to (1) edge match the Oklahoma and Texas Ecological Systems (ECS) data sets, (2) complete an enduring features (ecological site type; geophysical setting) data set for Oklahoma, (3) create a process for up-dating the ECS data set by detecting land cover change and modeling the revised ECS types, and (4) collect field data to characterize grassland composition in the Texas panhandle and adjacent Oklahoma. MoRAP staff will complete the first three tasks by leveraging knowledge, skills, and data on-hand from earlier work on the statewide ECS data sets. Staff from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation...

The Ecological Mapping System (ECS) of Texas data set is a spatially explicit map that was completed in sections, starting in 2007 through 2013. Methods developed in Texas were extended and used to complete mapping in Oklahoma in 2014 and 2015, so maps are compatible across state borders and cover about 11% of the conterminous USA (Figure 1). Vegetation patterns change so maps from any given date are less accurate as time passes. Cost-efficient methods of producing map up-dates are needed to facilitate planning and management. For example, habitat for the Golden-cheeked Warbler (GCWA) in the Texas Hill Country is under threat from conversion to grasslands for grazing and to urban uses. Since the original maps for...

The Gulf Coast Prairies LCC has initiated efforts to improve biological planning and landscape conservation design with a focus on implementing State Wildlife Plans (SWAPs) for the benefit of focal species and pollinators. To facilitate landscape conservation planning, the GCP LCC has supported land cover data projects as well as refining a platform for grassland planning, inventory and monitoring (G-MIT). These data are shared nationally through ScienceBase and the GCP Conservation Planning Atlas and used to inform their Grassland Decision Support Tool. While this work has been limited to parts of Texas and Oklahoma there is great interest and need to create high resolution, seamless and consistent land cover data...

The dataset includes Land Use/Land Cover types throughout the Chenier Eco-Region in Southwest Louisiana. Using the 2015 NAIP dataset (1m) as the basemap, E-Cognition image objects were derived from the multiresolution segmentation algorithm at 75 and 250 segments. Attempts to refine the data training methods using E-cognition, to extrapolate automating categories of this information to the entire map resulted with exceedingly low accuracy. Therefore, a raster was produced by piecing together several data resources, which provide reliable data for specific LULC categories. This process involved stitching together more reliable sources for specific categories to apply to higher resolution (75) segmentation product....

The 2010 North American Land Cover 30-meter dataset was produced as part of the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS), a trilateral effort between Natural Resources Canada, the United States Geological Survey, and three Mexican organizations including the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of the Biodiversity (Comisión Nacional Para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad), and the National Forestry Commission of Mexico (Comisión Nacional Forestal). The collaboration is facilitated by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, an international organization created by the Canada, Mexico,...

Land Change Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection (LCMAP) represents a new generation of land cover mapping and change monitoring from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. LCMAP answers a need for higher quality results at greater frequency with additional land cover and change variables than previous efforts. By utilizing a suite of operational automated algorithms to identify different forms of change and to characterize the large variety of land cover types, uses, and conditions that exist across the United States and beyond, LCMAP products provide land change science information in understanding changes in the type, intensity, condition, location, and time of...

The North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) identified an updated, consistent and accurate land cover data set as a primary base layer requirement for its long-term science and planning activities on the North Slope. The map described in this document is the outcome of a multi-year project to produce a moderate resolution land cover base layer to meet NSSI requirements. New Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) 30 meter resolution landcover maps were produced for the far western arctic, and for the area between the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska (NPRA) and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In the NPRA, an existing land cover map from the 1990’s was “crosswalked” to the NSSI land cover map classes, and a large portion of...
