Geospatial data were developed to characterize pre-fire biomass, burn severity, and biomass consumed for the Black Dragon Fire that burned in northern China in 1987. Pre-fire aboveground tree biomass (Mh/ha) raster data were derived by relating plot-level forest inventory data with pre-fire Landsat imagery from 1986 and 1987. Biomass data were generated for individual species: Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii Rupr. Kuzen), white birch (Betula platyphylla Suk), aspen (Populus davidiana Dode and Populus suaveolens Fischer), and Mongolian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litvinov). A raster layer of total aboveground tree biomass was also generated. Burned area was manually delineated using the normalized...
Climate change over the past century has altered vegetation community composition and species distributions across rangelands in the western United States. The scale and magnitude of climatic influences are largely unknown. We used fractional component cover data for rangeland functional groups and weather data from the 1985 to 2023 reference period in conjunction with soils and topography data to develop empirical models describing the spatio-temporal variation in component cover. To investigate the ramifications of future change across the western US, we extended models based on historical relationships over the reference period to model landscape effects based on future weather conditions from two emissions scenarios...
A sensitivity analysis of groundwater-recharge estimates from a water-budget model was completed for the islands of Oahu and Maui, Hawaii (Johnson and others, 2023). Results of the sensitivity analysis were used to quantify the relative importance of selected model parameters to recharge estimates for three moisture zones (dry, mesic, and wet) on Oahu and Maui. These shapefiles contain the boundaries of the moisture zones and boundaries of the model subareas that were used in the model simulations for Oahu and Maui. Attributes in the shapefiles include the names of the land-cover types assigned to model subareas and the mean annual recharge values determined for the model subareas for the baseline scenario of the...
La Soufrière Volcano is a 1,220 m high stratovolcano that occupies the northern half of the island of St. Vincent, Lesser Antilles, Eastern Caribbean. It has a long history of explosive and sometimes devastating eruptions. Beginning in December 2020 and ending in April 2021, La Soufrière Volcano produced a Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) 4 eruption that greatly impacted the landscape, communities, and infrastructure on the island of St. Vincent. The eruption produced intense ash plumes, heavy ashfall, and pyroclastic flows down several river valleys. During and following the eruption, destructive lahars (volcanic mudflows) impacted rivers valleys and coastal communities for months. The USGS-USAID Volcano Disaster...

Fine-sediment elemental chemistry and short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and Lead-210) were quantified to describe land-based sediment sources and runoff to Olowalu Reef in February 2022. Charcoal counts, total organic carbon contents, and 76 urban- and wildfire-associated contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified to explore urban and wildfire effects in watersheds above Olowalu Reef and in reef sediment. Sampling occurred approximately two months after winter flooding and one month after tsunamigenic waves impinged on the Maui shore from the eruption of Hunga-Tonga volcano in the South Pacific. The USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program...

Note: This data release is currently under revision and is temporarily unavailable. Phenological dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems reflect the response of the Earth's vegetation canopy to changes in climate and hydrology and are thus important to monitor operationally. The Exotic Annual Grass (EAG) phenology in the western U.S. rangeland based on 30m near seamless Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) weekly composites between 2016 and 2021 (Dahal et al., 2022) were processed using these 3 methods: (1) NDVI threshold-based method, (2) manual phenological metrics, and (3) modeling and mapping. The EAG phenology model produced eight metrics identifying the sustainable...
This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Beckley 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter resolution lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2020 and 2022. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

Tabular data output from a series of groundwater modeling simulations for five counties along the Central Coast of California, USA. We used a spatially explicit state-and-transition simulation model with stocks and flows that integrates climate, land-use change, human water use, and groundwater gain-loss to examine the impact of future climate and land use change on groundwater balance and water demand at 270-m resolution from 2010 to 2060. The model incorporated downscaled groundwater recharge projections based on a Warm/Wet and a Hot/Dry climate future using output from the Basin Characterization Model, a spatially explicit hydrological process-based model. Two urbanization projections from a parcel-based, regional...
A Groundwater Nitrate Decision Support Tool (GW-NDST) for wells in Wisconsin was developed to assist resource managers with assessing how legacy and possible future nitrate leaching rates, combined with groundwater lag times and potential denitrification, influence nitrate concentrations in wells (Juckem et al. 2024). Running and using the GW-NDST software involves downloading the software code (version 1.1.0) from the code repository (https://doi.org/10.5066/P13ETB4Q), downloading GIS data for the machine learning support models (child data release "GIS files required to run the Groundwater Nitrate Decision Support Tool for Wisconsin"), downloading the parameter uncertainty file (child data release "Parameter ensemble...
The Mammoth Springs (MS) fossil site at Hot Springs, South Dakota, provides a unique opportunity to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. We used luminescence dating on fine sand sized potassium feldspars to establish a chronological framework for the site. In addition, we dated a late Pleistocene paludal proxy site using luminescence and incorporated those results with previous radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating of the MS sinkhole organics suggested that the ages of the sediments that hosted the fossils was ~22-26 ka, while luminescence dating on feldspar grains suggested substantially older ages of ~130-255 ka. Analysis of the equivalent dose dispersion of the luminescence samples showed that the sediments...

Stakeholder science needs were determined by reviewing more than 200 recently published literature items and web pages from Colorado River Basin (CRB) stakeholders. These stakeholder communications were used to characterize over 400 stakeholder science needs by reviewing their priorities, strategies, issues, missions, and concerns related to drought in the CRB. Members of the CRB Integrated Science Pilot Project team identified each of the stakeholder’s science needs and categorized the needs based on science themes and science topics that the needs address in the landscape. The terms used as science topics were initially created by Pilot Project team members but then later were cross-walked to match terms in the...

These data were created to describe the causes of land cover change that occurred in the Lower Rio Grande (LRG) Valley and Alluvial Floodplain ecoregions of Texas for the time intervals of 2001 to 2006 and 2006 to 2011. The study area covers approximately 600,000 hectares at the southernmost tip of Texas and is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Some of the largest cities in the area include Brownsville and Harlingen, Texas. Two raster maps showing the causes of land change were created at a 30-meter resolution using automated and manual photo interpretation techniques. There were 26 categories of land change causes (for example, urban expansion or surficial mining) identified across the LRG...

In this data release, we present data from three nights of chilling temperatures in 2015 (18th/19th January 2015; 18th/19th February 2015; 5th/6th March 2015) and from three nights of freezing temperatures in 2017/2018 (6th/7th January 2017; 1nd/2nd January 2018; 16th/17th January 2018). In the paper that accompanies this release, we synthesized hypotheses regarding the effects of microclimatic variation on temperature gradients and mangrove freeze damage. Temperature data from the literature and temperature loggers were used to quantify ecologically-relevant temperature gradients. Then, literature-derived mangrove freeze damage data were used to quantify the ecological effects of these temperature gradients. Here...

Note: This data release is currently under revision and is temporarily unavailable. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed and implemented an algorithm that identifies burned areas in temporally dense time series of Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) scenes to produce the Landsat Burned Area Products. The algorithm makes use of predictors derived from individual ARD Landsat scenes, lagged reference conditions, and change metrics between the scene and reference conditions. Scene-level products include pixel-level burn probability (BP) and burn classification (BC) images, corresponding to each Landsat image in the ARD time series. Annual composite products are also available by summarizing the scene level...
