This dataset contains four tables of estimates of the yearly sum of nitrogen and phosphorus inputs from fertilizer applications and from manure applications in selected watersheds in Chesapeake Bay drainage basin from 1950 to 2012. For the fertilizer data, county-level loads were used from three published sources. Data from 1950 to 1985 are from Alexander and Smith (1990). Data for the year 1986 are from Battaglin and Goolsby (1995). Data from 1987 through 2012 are from Brakebill, Gronberg, and Spahr (2016). The practice of fire suppression across the western United States over the past century has led to dense forests, and when coupled with drought has contributed to an increase in large and destructive wildfires. Forest management efforts aimed at reducing flammable fuels through various fuel treatments can help to restore frequent fire regimes and increase forest resilience. This metadata record documents 2 comma delimited tables representing output from the Chesapeake Bay Program Phase 5.3.2 Watershed Model. The effect of best management practices (BMP) in 2014 in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBWS) is estimated through a series of model scenarios that isolate the effect of individual BMPs. Data include a table describing the series of isolation scenarios and the summarized output of all scenarios. Scenario output include the estimated nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment mass reductions for each BMP. Analysis of BMP implementation over time can provide insight to water quality restoration progress.
Tsunami travel time maps for Del Norte and Humboldt Counties in California in vector (shapefile) format for both slow and fast walking speeds and for bridges intact and bridges removed.
This data release is comprised of a set of six time travel map shapefiles (two tsunami evacuation zones and three travel times) and three population exposure by travel time tables (residents, employees, and hotel visitors). The travel time map was generated using the Pedestrian Evacuation Analyst model from the USGS (https://geography.wr.usgs.gov/science/vulnerability/tools.html). The travel time analysis uses ESRI's Path Distance tool to find the shortest distance across a cost surface from any point in the hazard zone to a safe zone. This raster data depicts the modeled distribution of three grassland states: Biocrust, Grass-bare, and Annualized-bare. We developed models of bare ground, total vegetation, exotic grasses and biological soil crust using spectral data from three year composites of growing season (March-October) Landsat data in Google Earth Engine and field data that were collected over the same period at monitoring sites. The Vertical Land Change project is an assessment of the impacts of surface mining in Perry County, Kentucky, the Mesabi Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota, and the west central part of Wisconsin. The dataset consists of abundance information of butterfly species (61 species) collected at 25 sites in northwest Indiana in 1998 and 1999. Each site was surveyed 21 times. Auxiliary data on environmental conditions were collected to allow us to relate habitat differences among sites to differences in abundance and composition of the butterfly community.
This Data Release summarizes measurements of hydraulic and physical properties of soils and ash at sites in the area impacted by the 2017 Thomas Fire, USA. Physical properties include dry bulk density, loss on ignition, and saturated soil water content. Hydraulic properties include field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, sorptivity, Green-Ampt wetting front potential, and soil water retention. Parameters used to represent soil water retention using the van Genuchten approach were also estimated. This product provides regional estimates of specific wetland types (bog and fen) in Alaska. Available wetland types mapped by the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) program were re-classed into bog, fen, and other. NWI mapping of wetlands was only done for a portion of the area so a decision tree mapping algorithm was then developed to estimate bog, fen, and other across the state of Alaska using remote sensing and GIS spatial data sets as inputs. This data was used and presented in two chapters on the USGS Alaska LandCarbon Report.
This dataset consists of modeled projections of land use and land cover for the State of California for the period 2001-2101. The Land Use and Carbon Scenario Simulator (LUCAS) model was initialized in 2001 and run forward on an annual time step to 2100. In total 9 simulations were run with 10 Monte Carlo replications of each simulation. This dataset consists of 262 variables which describe various known and suspected point and non-point sources of contaminants and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Contaminant data was summarized to the NHDPlus Version 2.1 catchment level (1:100K). A validation assessment of Land Cover Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection Collection 1 annual land cover products (1985–2017) for the Conterminous United States (CONUS) was conducted with an independently collected reference data set. Reference data land cover attributes were assigned by trained interpreters for each year of the time series (1984–2018) to a reference sample of 24,971 randomly-selected Landsat resolution (30m x 30m) pixels. The LCMAP and reference dataset labels for each pixel location are recorded for each year, 1985–2017.
