The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated national archive of geoscience maps, reports, and stratigraphic information. The Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 and its Reauthorizations calls for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) to cooperatively build this national archive, according to technical and scientific standards whose development is coordinated by the NGMDB. The NGMDB consists of a comprehensive set of publication citations, stratigraphic nomenclature, downloadable content in raster and vector formats, unpublished source information, and guidance on standards development. The NGMDB contains information on more than 110,000 maps and...

On January 5, 2013, the massive landslide took out a football field-sized portion of Newfound Gap Road (US 441) on the North Carolina side. Approximately 90,000 cubic yards of dirt, rock and roadway crashed 45-50 feet down the side of the mountain. Officials from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park found a subsurface spring underneath the landslide. NPS staff said the spring, along with last week's massive amounts of rainfall, contributed to the landslide Wednesday morning, near mile marker 22 between Collins Creek and Webb Overlook. TEM_50K contains Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) polygons with key and amalgamated (concatenated) attributes derived from the RISC (Resource Inventory Standards Committee) standard attributes completed at a scale of 1:50,000 or smaller (i.e. 1:100,000). TEM divides the landscape into units according to a variety of ecological features including climate, physiography, surficial material, bedrock geology, soils and vegetation. TEM methods include manual air photo interpretation supported by selective field checking. This layer is derived from the STE_TEI_ATTRIBUTE_POLYS_SP layer by filtering on the PROJECT_TYPE and PROJECT_MAP_SCALE attributes. By accessing this dataset you agree to the Province's license available...

Landslides are a common hazard on FSM and identified as a significant risk to human life by the CDC. In 1997, tropical storms (TS) triggered landslides in Pohnpei that resulted in 20 fatalities, impacting 14 homes. In 2002, a TS triggered over 250 landslides in Chuuk resulting in 47 fatalities and impacting 231 structures, totaling $100 million in damages. FSM has also been impacted by disastrous landslides in 1991, 1992, 2004, and 2018 – and certainly many other unreported landslides. Following the 2002 event, the CDC found that “increasing knowledge of natural warnings can reduce the risk for mortality during landslides.” As a first step, knowing what areas are susceptible to landslide hazards is key. To this...
