The Western Governors’ Wildlife Council has agreed to common definitions of crucial wildlife habitat and corridors and issued guidelines to help each state prioritize habitat within its boundaries to meet its specific conservation objectives. The West-wide definitions will also help achieve compatibility and consistency across state boundaries and address certain discrepancies that may exist in identifying habitat and natural features along state borders. In addition to helping states establish their individual CHATs, the Wildlife Council is creating a "regional CHAT" to provide an informed and continually updated picture of crucial wildlife habitat across the West. The state and regional CHATs will be non-regulatory...
We flew aerial line transect surveys between March 30 and May 3, 2012, to estimate the abundance of lesser prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) and lesser prairie-chicken leks in four habitat regions in the Great Plains U.S. Estimates were supplemented with data from surveys conducted by Texas Tech University in two regions in the Texas Panhandle and surveys conducted by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in Oklahoma. We also estimated the number of mixed species leks which contained both lesser and greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) and the number of hybrid lesser-greater prairie-chickens. The study area for 2012 included four regions containing the 2011 estimated occupied lesser...

Final Report,
Oklahoma encompasses portions of four Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCC’s) across the state and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) is a potential partner on each of these LCC Steering Committees. The largest commitment for ODWC participation will be with the Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC) which is Oklahoma’s largest LCC in terms of geographic coverage. ODWC requests funding to build capacity within the agency in order to better serve as science partners with the GPLCC. The development and subsequent distribution of spatial products will be the primary function of the project. These products will include a 5-state LEPC decision support tool, Black-Tailed Prairie...
Man-made water sources have been used as a management tool for wildlife, especially in arid regions, but the value of these water sources for wildlife populations is not well understood. In particular, the value of water as a conservation tool for Lesser Prairie-Chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) is unknown. However, this is a relevant issue due to a heightened conservation concern for the species and its occupancy of an arid landscape anticipated to experience warmer, drier springs and winters. We assessed if Lesser Prairie-Chickens would use commercially available wildlife water guzzlers and if there was any apparent selection between two design types. We confirmed that Lesser Prairie-Chickens would use bird...

Final Report,
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is cooperating with private, state, and federal partners to produce a new land classification map for Texas, based on the NatureServe Ecological System Classification System as described by Comer (2003), with a spatial resolution of 1 acre. The basic steps are to identify mapping sub-systems using ecological systems as a starting point, to collect data from air photos and the field to implement a supervised classification on Landsat TM imagery, and to use ecoregions, SSURGO soils, DEM-based variables, and hydrology to help interpret the ecological meaning of final mapping targets. Mapping of Texas High Plains and western portions of the Southwestern Tablelands and part of...
