Freshwater mussels (Unionidae) are among the most imperiled groups of organisms in the world. Unionids are plagued with a lack of basic information regarding species distributions, life history characteristics, and ecological and biological requirements. We assessed the influence of hydrologic factors on the occurrence of the Suwannee Moccasinshell, Medionidus walkeri, a federally threatened freshwater mussel species endemic to the Suwannee River basin in Georgia and Florida. We provide genetic and distribution data for the Louisiana Pigtoe, Pleurobema riddellii, to guide decisions related to federal protection for the species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Our final dataset includes 125 COI sequences generated as part of our study representing P. riddellii from eight North American river basins. This includes the COI sequence we generated from a museum specimen collected from the Trinity River in the late 1900s, which is the first genetic confirmation of P. riddellii in the Trinity River basin. This data release includes physical and chemical data for samples from upland source and streambank sampling sites in the Little River basin, Kentucky. Data were collected from March to November of 2014. These data include total nitrogen and carbon concentrations, organic carbon concentrations, concentrations for 37 metals, and particle-size analysis. Source samples were grouped into one of four land use categories: Crop, pasture, riparian, or streambank. These data are used for sediment fingerprinting in order to quantify the proportional contribution of sources to suspended sediment in the basin.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Little River Water-Quality Consortium (LRWQC), collected water samples at 19 sites in the upper Little River Basin, Kentucky, from November 1, 2012 to November 30, 2014. This digital dataset contains site information, analyzing laboratories and methods, and water chemistry for these samples. Water chemistry results include concentrations of nutrients, suspended sediment, dual-nitrate isotopes, Escherichia coli, and microbial-source genetic markers.
