The data release encapsulates geospatial data in support of the regional scale study, Coal Geology and Assessment of Coal Resources and Reserves in the Little Snake River coal field and Red Desert assessment area, Greater Green River Basin, Wyoming. The assessment area covers about 2,300 square miles of the Eastern portion of the 15,400 square mile Greater Green River Basin in Southwestern Wyoming. This release includes geospatial data for the study area boundary, depth to coal, thickness of coal, outcrops and reliability. These data were compiled from numerous sources, the primary one being a database of point data that resides in a separate data release.

This product includes a model archive using the iRIC-SAC Solver for indirect discharge computation of the spring snowmelt peak flow surveyed on May 27, 2023, and estimated to have occurred in early April 2023. The best-fit discharge for this flood is 3,500 ft3/s. Other data include topographic cross-section data, control points, and high-water marks collected by RTK GPS, and selected photographs of the survey. The location of this survey is a ~300-meter reach of Sand Creek ending at the upstream side of the Shell Creek Stock Trail bridge. Evidence of additional likely coincident floods on tributaries that enter Sand Creek between the Shell Creek Stock Trail bridge and the confluence of Sand Creek with the Little...

We used a before-and-after study design to examine effects of changes in cattle grazing practices on channel stability in Muddy Creek, an arroyo in the Colorado River headwaters. The changes in grazing practices were abrupt and focused on keeping cattle out of the riparian zone and increasing herd movement. We digitized 620 meander loop cutoff geometries within the alluvial valley bottom of Muddy Creek. Poisson regression modeling of meander loop cutoff rate indicated that the change in grazing practices caused a decline in meander loop cutoff rate that was on the scale of an order of magnitude and independent of other hydroclimatic and human-caused factors. The polyline data released here was used in our analysis...

These data were compiled for the National Park Service and Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program. Objective(s) of our study were to resurvey previously established cross sections on the Yampa and Little Snake rivers in the Deerlodge Park area to document changes in channel width, depth, and cross-sectional area. A secondary purpose of this study was to document the location of the cross-section endpoints using modern Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements so that future researchers may easily replicate these surveys. These data represent the 2017 resurvey coordinates and elevations of previously established cross sections on the Little Snake and Yampa rivers. These data were collected in Lily...

The U.S. Geological Survey conducted an assessment of coal resources and reserves in the Little Snake River coal field and Red Desert area of the Greater Green River Basin in Southwest Wyoming. A comprehensive database was compiled to support this assessment that includes data points for drill-holes and measured sections. Associated with these resources are lithology descriptors, (focusing on coal beds of varying depth) as well as coal quality data. Sources of data includes the USGS National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS), Anadarko Land Corporation (Anadarko), Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC), and previously unpublished data in USGS files. The primary table describes the sample location and...

Aerial photographs of the Yampa and Little Snake Rivers acquired in 1954 and 1961 were used to examine channel changes occurring along these two rivers during this time period. In addition, these data were used to develop and test a generalizable new approach to characterizing the uncertainty associated with analyses of channel change based on time series of remotely sensed data, which we term the Spatially Distributed Probabilistic (SDP) method. This technique accounts for errors introduced during: 1) image co-registration and geo-referencing; 2) interpreting the location of the channel boundary; and 3) digitizing the channel boundary. The method provides a probability distribution of channel locations and can...
